Let's just save everyone time:

Everyone except JSWolf: There are multiple good starting points to read Discworld, don't feel like you have to read them in publishing order.

JSWolf: The only way to read the Discworld novels is in publishing order and this is the hill I've decided to die on.

There, we can dispense with the 20 or so comments of

this time around and continue on with free & discounted ebooks as usual.

You don't have to read in published order. The best order is actually chronological order.

Honestly, I forgot this was a Thing. It was not an attempt to bait anyone.

Callahan's Crosstime Saloon by Spider Robinson is $1.50 on Amazon.com
This is the first Callahan collection. It's a humorous series about a pub with guests from across space and time.

The Angel of the Crows by Katherine Addison is a Kindle Daily deal in the UK, for 99p - Amazon UK. This is a Victorian urban fantasy from the author of The Goblin Emperor.

Also, Rob J Hayes' The Ties that Bind trilogy appears to be free (as separate volumes but not as an omnibus). These are self-published, but the first book in the follow-up series won the Self-Published Fantasy Blog Off a few years ago, so has a respectable pedigree. The Heresy Within is the first book, here. The second and third should be linked from there.

When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain by Nghi Vo is free on Tor.com's ebook club (until May 28th)

This is the sequel to The Empress of Salt and Fortune, which I read and liked.
I believe this is a standalone, so you don't have to read that one first. It features the same main character, who is a chronicler of past events.

Quote:
The cleric Chih finds themself and their companions at the mercy of a band of fierce tigers who ache with hunger. To stay alive until the mammoths can save them, Chih must unwind the intricate, layered story of the tiger and her scholar lover—a woman of courage, intelligence, and beauty—and discover how truth can survive becoming history.

Why say it is standalone when you don't know? I don't know of many series where the second book is standalone. Given it has the same main character, I would say that it's not standalone.

Why say it's not standalone when you don't know?

Given that the publisher says it is, and I found that in a couple of seconds of searching.

Quote:
Nghi Vo returns to the empire of Ahn and The Singing Hills Cycle in When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain, a mesmerizing, lush standalone follow-up to The Empress of Salt and Fortune.

[...]

The novellas of The Singing Hills Cycle are linked by the cleric Chih, but may be read in any order, with each story serving as an entrypoint.

I didn't say "I don't know". I had it on good authority that is standalone, only it wasn't firsthand.

Most TV shows, even though they're serials, are standalone. You don't need to watch the first episode of most sitcom or police procedural / detective shows to understand what's happening in any episode. Many mystery novels are likewise standalone. Including things like *ahem* Discworld. Past events, when relevant to the current story, are summarized by the narrator or characters.

In the case of Empress, the main character was very passive in that story. It wasn't ABOUT them, and that story ended. Even if I read no opinions or summaries about this one, it's a very educated guess that you don't need to know anything about it.
