One could counter that the HD processor is slower, it's too heavy, it doesn't have adaptive lighting, bezel controls, and...oh yeah...integrated access to Amazon's bookstore...clearly it's inequitable because the Voyage is in a much higher class! How dare Kobo charge so much?!

No, not really. You say "not equitable" but it's clear that you mean "not what I want." They ARE the same class: High-end dedicated ereaders, and comparing them is quite proper. The features you list are not an inequity on either side, they are differentiators.

On the matter of screen size, were 5" readers ever significant less expensive than 6" readers? And 5 to 6 is a bigger percentage jump than 6 to 6.8.

That's strange, since the Aura HD uses a microSD card as its internal storage.

Since I live in mythic splendor and have access to wealth beyond count, I'll just buy both.

What adds more to the cost though, the .8" in display size of the HD or the higher pixel density of the Voyage? I'd guess that at this point & time the high pixel density displays might have a higher rejection rate as they get things up and running so they might cost more than a display that's been in use for a while.

Raises hand. I have about 3,500 books on a card (transferred as kePub using Calibre) and it runs pretty smooth. That said I don't need the feature & only started doing things that way because occasionally I've had the reset my device due to glitchy firmware (this way I don't have to re-transfer everything).

Hear, hear! If the smart people of MR can jailbreak it, I'll think about getting one. Maybe. Especially if I can get it on sale.

Interesting. What does "pretty smooth" mean?

How long does it take you to go from collection to collection? Do you ever have trouble with covers not appearing? Occasional lockups?

Perhaps they have fixed the issues in one of the recent firmware updates.

I imagine any good ebook app under android can do this. Certainly, I can do it with Aireader and Coolreader on my Nook ST.

Also, I think PRS+ allowed the touchscreen to be deactivated on a Sony.

That is how I learned of it in the first place. I've not yet seen an explanation of why an inaccessible SD card would be faster than an accessible one.

Pretty smooth meaning that there can be a bit of lag sometimes if browsing library "pages" or switching from home to library.

I don't use collections anymore, I generally just use the library search which is quite responsive. Not had any trouble with covers and never had a lockup.

That sounds pretty smooth to me.

That must have fixed it up a lot in the last few firmware updates.

Ok, to revise what I said before, I only know of one person who has a large library on an SD card on the Aurda HD.

Really? I thought the PW2 was as hackable as the PW1.

I have a large library on replaced internal SD cards in my Mini and Glo. They run just as fast as the original cards they were shipped with. So, I don't need an exterior card on the Glo since they have 16gb and 32 gb internal cards.

It tempts me far more than the Kindle Voyage, to be honest. In the Netherlands, I can return it within two weeks, if handled carefully, so the only loss I might sustain are some shipment costs and an €10 Ebay cover I won't be using.

Seeing the prices of the current SD cards, Kobo should just have created a reader with a slide-off back cover (just like phones used to have), and deliver the reader with no card. The buyer could then easily install a card of any size. The external slot could then be dropped.

If the OS is on the card, they could still offer a reader with different card sizes, for a reasonable amount of extra money. It would make usage easier, and still one-up the Kindle regarding storage.
