hm, you know, a few years ago i had a headache that lasted (uninterrupted, and with total resistance to all pain-relieving / headache medicines i took) for months. it was there every single day when i woke up in the morning and it was still there when i went to sleep at night, and i'm sure it was there all night long too but i was thankfully unconscious for that bit.

my doctor treated me for everything she could think of, sent me to the opthalmologist, to the dentist, and had my skull x-rayed to see whether it could be a sinus infection but it defied diagnosis just as effectively as treatment.

in the end it turned out to be stress-related, as she realised when she asked me what else was going on in my life (bad year, particularly at work, where i was being tormented daily by a sadistic boss and co-worker) and how i was feeling in general (not great, since i was also suffering from persistent nausea, losing weight since it's hard to eat when you feel you might be sick, insomnia...).

i ended up leaving that job and eventually got better, but only by treating the cause of the stress, which was not really medical.

headaches can really often be a sign of something going wrong in the head, and i don't mean physically, so it's important to think about those possible causes and try to identify and treat them too.

i hope you figure it out, whatever it is, soon, and get rid of it. i really sympathise, trust me, since i know just what you are going through.

I am really in need of hot weather right now, could have used that last week. I think I got a major cold yesterday. Must have been the combination bike+rain+wind (for 5 days...)
For NYC this has been the worst summer ever. There are so many nights that I have to close my window because its so cold outside, last night the gods were angry again and it was pouring and thundering again. Someone must have sacrificed a lamb because the sun is out now but we'll see how long that will keep the gods happy.

hm, how did i end up in new york ??

oh no, wait, it's just the exact same summer over here. sadly, this is not the first time. summers have been getting crappier and crappier in the past few years, either freezing, grey, rainy and windy, or else far too hot to be enjoyed, and rarely any happy medium. it's really striking if you compare with the typical summer we had around 10 years ago, which was mostly sunny and warm but not too hot, really great weather for enjoying the concerts and cinema in the parks... i miss summer.

Same here in the UK I remember summers as a kid where you could smell the hot tar bubbling, when walking on the pavement was hot enough to burn your feet. Now it's hot in the morning, thunderous by afternoon, freezing at night or boiling or....who the hell knows!!!

"il n'y a plus de saisons, mon pauvre ! ...c'est la faute à sarkozy."

so what do you think the chances are that this is linked to some phenomenon (like global warming) that we could possibly reverse, and corollary, what are the chances we could actually reverse it ?

...never mind, don't answer that. i'm depressed enough as it is.

Just on cue what little sunshine was to be had this morning has dissapeared and now its thunder and lightning all the way I know we English like to have something to complain about (that and a good queue) but this is frakking ridiculous!

arf, sorry ! over here i keep trying to decide whether it's worth going outside to read for a while ; from time to time the sun comes out and i think "yes ! let's go outside !" but then before i can get myself organised (where's my other shoe ?) the sun goes away again and i think "bugger it, i'll stay home instead." so far it's not actually raining, although they did announce rain. they also announced rain for tomorrow and... tuesday. which is the 14th. otherwise known as "national fireworks day". ha ! not if it's raining !

The only good thing about all this is that the nice thick reefer jacket I bought for Winter can be used the whole year round

Please send the thunder and lightning down south - I won't complain about it!

Personally I prefer cooler summers, but regrettably that's not so good for crops etc

As for hot summer memories... sitting on nanna's porch trying to keep a glass of ribena cool by shading it with a dock leaf - 1976
Gloopy tarmac
And a couple of years back one side of Oxford St in London being plunged into darkness due to a combination of a problem with cables/electricity sub station (which took out a lot of the spare capacity), and a very hot day with all the shops and offices turning their airconditioning as cool as it could go. All non-essential staff in my office got sent home that day for h&s reasons (the loos needed electricity for the water pumps to work!). Unfortunately I was classed as essential

well, i'm not saying i'd like a replay of the "canicule" (heat wave) of 5 or 6 years ago, but this is ridiculous.

I originally read that as you saying you wanted to wear all your summer clothes, as in at once and all at the same time. Then I re-read it and it made a lot more sense!

I prefer spring and autumn clothes (and the seasons). summer clothes for me these days have to involve long sleeves. Whereas in my youth I used to go dark brown at the first hint of sun these days I go brown, but with a side order of what looks like prickly heat (but as I don't get it just from heat, only exposure to the sun, I'm not sure)

no, i just mean i have so many really cute summer dresses, and i want to wear them, but it's far too cold and i'm stuck dressing as if it were october instead of july. (seriouly, i *love* my summer dresses).

meh, i do have a few cute autumn skirts i suppose. and i do have some really excellent boots which are not only stylie but also (amazingly) very comfortable *and* warm. but still.

what is prickly heat ? i'm pretty sensitive to the sun as well but i just wear a sunblock factor eleventy hundred or something. (although if it's hot and humid i might have a bit of a reaction even with the sunblock. but that is the least of my worries because when it is hot and humid i tend to go all woozy and then faint like some overplayed character from a 19th century melodrama. i can't tell you how much i hate that).

I don't look good in cute summer dresses, otherwise I might have a different opinion of the season

It's also known, in the UK at least, as heat rash. It's an annoying, incredibly incredibly itchy rash that is apparently caused by pores getting blocked leading to an inability to sweat properly. It's apparently a lot more common in hot & humid conditions. However, as I get it only on exposure to the sun, and on areas that tend not to sweat, I think it's something else - maybe I'm just allergic to the sun

I can seriously empathise with the woozy bit, although I tend not to faint. Thankfully.

clearly you just don't have the *right* summer dresses. i would recommend you keep looking, but given the weather, there is probably no point...

icky, sounds very annoying ! i don't get that, i just get an odd reaction which is not sunburn but definitely some kind of reaction to the sun, more like when your skin gets irritated by a cream which it doesn't like. maybe i'm allergic to the sun as well. apparently you can be.

Quote:

i don't always faint, but even the woozy bit is unpleasant. the worst is when it's hot but not necessarily humid, and then you go into a store which is using one of those portable air conditioners which make the air more humid as they are cooling it (i have no idea how they work exactly, but i really hate them). those things can drop me within 5 minutes or so if i don't go back outside.
