The UK is always a higher price than elsewhere. Included in the price we pay is 20% VAT that goes to the government.

I just looked up minimum wage for UK and it's about 8£ for adults? Yikes! How do you folks afford anything?

I guess no one is paid that minimum in real life. Unlike here, where the monthly minimum is 584€ and many people really get no more than that (don't ask me how they live, I don't know )

At the moment using a currency calculator a straight conversion of $209.00 for an 8gb forma works out as £158.33 if you add the 20% vat, it comes out as £189.99 - showing that those of us in the UK are still being ripped off.

Incidentally I bought my second 32gb forma when Kobo had screwed up their pricing and had it on sale at £149.99 or $198.97. I can't wait for their next screw up with the pricing, although the libra2 looks good at 32gb for £159.99+cover

Here in the Philippines, the average daily minimum wage where I am is 8 US$ per day. In manila it is about 11$

I wish I had been brave then and gone for that. I’m also looking at a Libra 2 when Amazon get them.

Where are you? The US Federal minimum wage is less than the equivalent of 8£ an hour, and the national "average minimum wage" is about $1US more than the UK equivalent, if Wikipedia is to be believed

I thought the US was close to the UK, but doing a google, it appears the US federal minimum wage is $7.25 (5.25£).

https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/wages/minimumwage

As far as "average" minimum wage (at least currently), your number seems a little high. Many states seems to be at $7.25.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimu...d_States#State

I was surprised by the U.S. numbers. My state's is $13 and going to $15.

It's not my number, as I said, it's from the Wiki article:

"The effective nationwide minimum wage (the wage that the average minimum wage worker earns) is $11.80 as of May 2019. This is the highest it has been since at least 1994, the earliest year effective minimum wage data was available"

If you had used the term "effective" I wouldn't have commented. I assumed the post that started this (U.K. minimum wage) wasn't an "effective" wage but a law.

And although that "effective" number may sound nice, looking at the wiki article some states have no minimum wage (making the minimum wage $7.25); I wonder what the "effective" minimum wage is for those states?

I'm not responsible for you misreading my post and assuming that the number I posted was "mine", nor am I responsible for your missing my very clear attribution of that number to Wikipedia. I made no comment at all on the adequacy, relevance or otherwise of the number.

Your original post:

8£ is about $10.65. So you are correct $7.25 is less then the equivalent of $10.65. Seems like a rather silly thing for you to say, I think most people would figure out that $7.25 is less then $10.65.

A much more accurate statement for you to say would be:

The US federal minimum wage is $7.25, which is about 5.25£.

Quote:
and the national "average minimum wage" is about $1US more than the UK equivalent, if Wikipedia is to be believed
You are correct, I did miss the "effective" part.

I would be interested in what the UK "effective minimum wage" is, as I don't believe we have seen that posted yet.
