IIRC that field was used in the old db until series sorting started taking language into consideration. The column can't be removed because that would make calibre downgrades incompatible.

If you want to see the series_sort for each book make a custom column based on other columns (not tags) and use the template
Code:
program: series_sort()

FTR: I don't have any 'series' as the term is commonly understood around here. So I don't have the problem.

@Jellby - would it help if MDE displayed series_sort() - non editable?

@chaley - I'd noticed the sort column in the series table definition previously, so I was a bit surprised to find today that it wasn't in Manage Series. Not like you to overlook something like that - now I know why

(MDE = metadata editor?)

It would help in the sense of making it less obscure, especially if a tooltip or otherwise explains that it is automatically generated based on the book's first language.

It would not help to fix the problem that a single series can have several series_sort, or that a wrong series_sort cannot be fixed.

PS. An editable series_sort could also allow a single series with multiple unrelated names (sometimes a publisher changes the name of a series but keeps the old numbering).
