Barry, I've only spent a little time with the Glowlight 3 (I won't be able to mess with it again until after Christmas). It's very nice, but it is SLOW. When reading it is fine, but doing anything else it chugs a little.

Once you have it, can you compare performance between it and the Glowlight Plus? Also, does the new beta firmware speed things up any?

Definitely more than one. Need to sell some older models actually! However, I'd still want at least two.

Why? Although I've never broken a reader, I read so much and my eyes prefer e-ink so much that I feel having a spare is HIGHLY desirable. My preferred reader is Kobo, which needs to come from Canada, so if something happened, I'd have to go without for a week. The horror!

Also, I digitize books as a hobby and having a couple readers allows me to use one for proofreading, one for pleasure. I can also do things like compare the look of different versions of SVG title pages or different formatting. And by having both Kindle and Kobo, I can use features like whispersync to back up proofreading notes, while using my 7.8" Aura ONE screen to do my pleasure reading. And I can test that my ePubs work well when converted to Kindle format!

Then there's the battery thing. Nice to be able to put a reader on to charge, pick up another reader, keep reading.

I'm probably not typical, but them's my reasons....

I'll do some comparing. It should be here Friday and I'll play with it over the weekend. I'm not particularly concerned about slow, within reason of course, as long as it works well. My thought is that if I can get the full 6 gig, or much of it, for books, I'll use it as a sort of warehouse; something to browse through and remind myself old things I'd forgotten. I won't really know if this is useful till I try it though.

I've mostly used my Glowlight Plus as a loaner for my neighbors who want to borrow a book. I've read a few books on it and overall I like it but the capacative home button and the grayed out dictionary make it difficult for me to use. Let my neighbors have that difficulty.

I remember reading that the earlier Nooks could be jailbroken or rooted or some such to be used with other ereading apps and maybe I'll be able to eventually use another app on this thing with a better dictionary. Wouldn't it be fun to use a Kindle app. Moon+ is probably what I'd actually use.

By the way, making this purchase was a huge lesson in the problems that face B&N. I was unable to make the purchase successfully online even after several tries. When I called their phone support I was unable to get past their voice menu system in any way at all. i tried quite a few times. I finally got into their chat support and the guy tried walking me through it and it failed. He suggested I close the browser, go back to B&N and try again. That did work after many attempts. I placed the order.

About half an hour later I got 2, yes two, emails from Paypal about the payment to B&N. I was charged twice. I only ordered one but I had to pay twice. I tried calling this morning and still wasn't able to get through. This time it told me they're too swamped and to call back some other time. So I got them on chat again and they've looked at it, found that they screwed up and have promised me a refund. I'm holding my breath.

How can one company make so many mistakes so quickly? They're just amazing!

I feel your pain. I ordered the Glowlight 3 online and faced some minor issues. I couldn't complete the purchase on Firefox for Android and had to switch from my tablet to Firefox on my laptop. No problems there though, so I don't know if it was the browser, the tablet or B&N.

I also picked up a cheap Nook tablet when they were on sale for $30. For that I just walked into the store and it was easy-peasy.

I do agree that their customer service just isn't quite up to snuff.

This morning I was notified that my Nook will be delivered Next Wednesday even though I paid extra to have it delivered this Friday. I called B&N but again couldn't get through on the phone. This time it did put me on hold to wait for an operator and then hung up on me. Three times!

I couldn't get their chat to work today so I called back a couple more times and finally got to talk to someone. Hooray! He said that no matter what it said it'll be here Friday. Yeah, right! I have faith in them.

I think I may be judging B&N too harshly. Instead of looking at the problems in their service I should be congratulating them on the effectiveness of their Get it Wrong department. They do an amazing job.

Who knows when I'll get it. I won't be surprised if it's here Friday. I won't be surprised if it's not! Anything can happen.

I'm bad. Ordered a Nook Glo 3 as though I actually needed it. Honestly, I don't know what comes over me. It's the $89 thing - must just get me. The order went through without problem and it says that it will arrive next week.

Graycyn, that is actually a good idea. I have had about a dozen books digitized that I haven't got round to proofing. I will just pick one of these excessive readers and put those on there. I used to be very organized on that, but well, that was 2 years ago.

I just can't bring myself blow $90 on myself days before Christmas. But I'm jealous of those that have!

If the entire memory was available from day 1, I would have just bought two at the Black Friday sale, But now the momentum is broken for me.

As someone who has broken at least 5 readers, I agree wholeheartedly with this statement. Being without your books because of a cracked screen really sucks.

Maybe it is the shipper and not B&N. UPS has already had numerous problems getting packages delivered this Christmas Season. I have already had vendors, that use UPS exclusively, tell me that they can not guarantee even overnight packages. And UPS has not delivered packages on time because they loaded the packages on the wrong vehicles. So far this year I have not had a problem with Fed Ex.

I have more than one Standalone e-reader, because each time birthday/gift money came up, and there was a sale on e-readers I had not "tried" before, I'd be intrigued enough to buy one.

Some E-readers got inherited by other family members and friends. A couple I still have. I now have greatly reduced my frequency of buying e-readers, because I have settled on my Kindle Paperwhite as the ultimate. I gave mine to my daughter and promptly replaced it when a black Friday sale (online) came along.

I also own a smartphone and a tablet, each has plenty of e-reader apps (both dedicated store apps as well as Moon+Reader pro). But I like having a lot of e-reading options available to me. I plan to maintain my current e-reader + phone + tablet trio because it's a system that works for me.

I always travel with 2 Kindles. If I drop one, I have another. Should one freeze, I have another. I used to bring several books when traveling, not because I'd read them all, but because I might like to switch from one to another, and the kind of books I enjoy one doesn't find in airport bookstores. I'd hate to be stuck on a 5 hour flight with nothing good to read! Even on weekend trips to my cottage an hour from town I bring 2 ereaders. Have I ever really needed an extra one? No. But why not be prepared? They are so small and light...

Have you ever seen what it takes to sort that volume? I have (I did 5 xmases with them).
Driver Routes are split apart from their regular covered areas and/or a Morning and Afternoon load split because there were too many BIG packages to fit. . The loaders have seconds to pull the package and put it at the correct package car.

In a Metro area, drivers are close and a Sup or meet exchange is possible when a mis-load is spotted. On a rural route, the package has to return to the station at the end of the route.

Automation (those smaller white, EDD stickers with a route # on it) has helped reduce errors. But volume has more than doubled since the days it was just the loaders eyeball and route knowledge.

I don't think saying it might be the shipper, not B&N was an attack on UPS so much as it was a defense of B&N. They take their deserved lumps, but not every error is their fault.
