Odessa being very A R.
Oh and off topic I met W & W in the late 70's. Two different times and they were incognito. Care to guess where.

Invited to a party my boss hosted when I had left home and had my first job. Invitation said 'Bring a Plate'. So I went to a store and bought a plate. Handed it to the boss's wife when they welcomed me to the party.

Few minutes later I was drinking beer with my buddies when the boss's wife asked me to step into the kitchen. Assuming she needed something heavy moved I hurried in only to discover all the wives were awaiting my arrival. The boss's wife then asked me what I thought 'bring a plate' meant. And to my humiliation I quickly learned what it actually meant as they all broke into gales of laughter.

I'm sure the women all got a kick out of the young lad's naivety!

In Mickey's defense, my husband said he had never heard "bring a plate" either.

No, I haven't either. But I would have interpretted it correctly!

edit: Oh -- I've heard "bring a dish". I wonder if it was actually phrased like that!

Could it be men are typically more literal than women?
Women would catch the implied food.
Men might think they don't have enough plates to go around.

Though I guess on food related stupids, the funniest one I ever witnessed was the person that brought "homemade" cookies in a store container. Wouldn't have been so funny if the container wasn't still sealed. But since this was the same person that got pregnant (without the aid of a male or doctor) when her sister did and lost the pregnancy 18 months later, we all rather overlooked it. Same person also had a stepfather that her mother had never met.
She was a strange character. She also told her mom she worked 40 hours a week. She worked 2 hours a day, 2 days a week.

I would've asked. I'd want specific details. Is the plate/dish just for me or is it part of a potluck? What kind of food and how much should it be (full-course meal, entree, veggie, dessert)?

I'm a male who has no difficulty asking for clarification. If I'm lost, I'll stop and ask for directions.

I'm sure I would have correctly understood too, but yes "bring a dish" makes more sense. Or as we say where I live, it is a pot luck dinner; meaning everyone should bring some kind of food that will hopefully go with what others bring.

As a single guy, I will often bring something store bought. I don't even want eat the stuff I cook, much less make others have to eat it! So I will ask if I can bring cookies or pie because I can buy those at the store.

At work, I used to bring "day-old" baked goods. They were half-price and still in date.

Can't say I blame you but do you try to say that you made it?
That was what was hilarious. She claimed she spent all day baking them.

COSTCO croissants! They're good, serve a good many people, go well with most any thing, and they're CHEAP!

And if your take them out of the COSTCO package and put them into something more "home made" looking you can claim them!
