Yes you can, but then that dialog will appear reminding you to backup your apps. And it seems that if I don't back up the apps the backup doesn't record the time correctly, leading me to wonder what else it messed up. It messed up my first backup this morning claiming it lost connection even though it was still connected via USB cable. I had to run it again and that time it recorded the correct time. |

My Updates are working fine now and all my devices are still on 8.4.1. I think the Update's grey out on the devices when the itunes servers can't take any more update requests.

I'm going to wait until I hear other people using iOS9 on the original iPad Mini Retina before I even try to install it on mine. I'm worried the older device might slow down too much. I also want to test it out on my iPhone 6+ and get to know all about it first. So far so good, no glaring issues... |

I have it on my iPad mini original (not retina) and its fine. YMMV.
I've been doing OTA updates lately and find that far less aggravating than doing a full update via itunes. |

This was the first time I tried an update via wired connection to iTunes, and the LAST. I went ahead and updated my iPad Mini Retina original too, but I used the OTA method. It went very smoothly compared to the iTunes method I tried with my iPhone 6+.

OTA updates just download a "delta" from the current firmware. iTunes always downloads a complete system image, so OTA updating is generally a lot quicker and requires less free space.

The main advantage of doing the iTunes update is that the full .ipsw is downloaded and cached, so if you had to restore, you don't have to redownload. If my 3 devices needed restoring now, I would have to have a complete download for each of them. Hmm... maybe I should have done that.
After 24 hours of use I find that I am neither impressed nor annoyed by anything much (except being able to use Stanza to my satisfaction, again, though on the Mini, some of the settings simply arent there. The app doesnt crash, you just can't access the same settings that are available on iphone. This may always have been the case, I never used it for more than checking that it works with new firmwares) |

A bit disappointed that the split screen feature won't work on my iPad Mini 2 as it requires the iPad Mini 4. Also still very annoyed that they have never placed a fourth roll of keys on the keyboard for numbers. Having to constantly toggle back and forth between number screen and letter screen is so 1990s! Especially annoying and a PITA when entering passwords which nearly always contain both letters and numbers. ETA: Also annoyed that they still have some stupid wallpaper algorithm that seems to only work with Apple's official wallpapers. If you rotate the iPhone/iPad from portrait to landscape with one of the iOS wallpapers installed, the wallpaper stays the same size. But if you use a custom wallpaper then rotating into landscape causes the wallpaper image to get zoomed. Really distracting, really unnecessary, and really aggrevating that they have to exercise so much control even over the GD wallpapers! Must be the ghost of Steve Jobs giving us the middle finger. If you want to make 100% sure you have a backup of your device, use iTunes on a computer to backup your device. You will not lose that backup.

My dl and install went easily. My iTunes is having a problem recognizing my purchases when synching/backing up my 6+ but otherwise no problems and all is working a bit better than the previous edition.
I've not used it enough to notice better battery usage but I have noticed that the phone seems to run a bit faster and with better reception then previously...especially in my workplace where I barely got one bar...old concrete and steel building...I now have two bars normally. I did have to go through all my apps and settings to make sure I have only the services running I want...Apple seems to love turning every service for every app to full use so it takes a bit of time, not wasted time, to go through everything. iTunes has never been as user friendly or user manageable as it could be...seems Apple likes it that way but imo it is still better than anything else out there that I have tried to meet my needs and desires so I "conform" to the Apple way... |
