The new Galaxy Tab A has a 4:3 ratio and there is a version with the S-Pen. The resolution is not great but if you are not looking at watching super HD movies but intend on working with PDF, it looks quite suitable. It comes in a 9.3" (if I remember correclty) or a 8" version.

IMHO the price is still too high for what it is, but it looks like it will be the sole replacement for the Galaxy Note 10.1 this year.

Honestly, there are so many Galaxy tablets, it makes my head swim!
I'll look into this one also.

What PDF app would you recommend? I've not been able to find a decent one for Android.

Background: I'm just getting my feet wet reading PDf on android, am not a fan of Adobe, and dislike touch screen navigation (I'm OK with touchscreen menu and keyboard).

Of the half dozen Android PDF readers I've tried, I am by far most happy with Adobe's PDF reader for android, especially when the margins, headers, and footers have been cropped. Scrolling is responsive and smooth. When text on the bottom have of page refers to a figure near the top of the next page, or vice versa, it is trivial and natural to see both at once. Other readers can do this as well, but it feels smoother and less fiddly to me using the Adobe reader. Using the table of contents and following and returning from internal links has also been satisfactory. I have had trouble getting stranded in other readers.

When the unzoomed font is comfortable to me, and discounting any discomfort from backlit screens, I'm finding PDF reading in Adobe android superior to epub or mobi for short stretches of reading.

Yeah capacitive is really no different from using a finger, I bought a few of them hoping for the best and they really weren't worth the money.

The wacom ones are just much more accurate and precise with much smaller tips, they have pressure sensitivity and most importantly in my opinion you can have the screen ignore everything but the pen when drawing/writing it's amazing the difference that makes.

To be fair though I think there is a few stylus available for the apple devices that use bluetooth but they still look much to bulky in my opinion I've no idea quite how well they work but I do know unlike the S-Pen you have to charge them.

On android I use xodo for PDF annotations. In general I am a Onenote heavy user.

Right now I am working more with my Lenovo yoga tablet (which has the excellent anypen feature) and my ipad (with onenote and goodnotes and a jot script pen), because those are the 2 I took with me. From October till June I switch between windows and android depending on my classes.

There is no way I could work with a capacitive stylus, they are no good for writing and I need to hand write a lot. But that's just me.

Re BT pen for the ipad: both the Bamboo Fineline and the Jot Script work very well for handwriting.

I have one that was on the back of a pen I picked up at a hotel. It is much smaller than my finger and thus is much more precise. I find it very useful. Even if you buy one they are very cheap and are handy for small keyboards and when drawing. I have a second one that I bought (it was very cheap) but the one on the back of the pen is handier.

It's not more precise it's basically exactly the same as your finger it's interacting with the screen in exactly the same way.

With the S-Pen/Wacom type you can also see a small cursor (almost just a little dot) when you are hovering it close to the screen that means you can judge the position it lands down to the pixel, they also have a small button on the side that can perform a different function depending on what you are doing.

I can see how capacitive stylus might be handy for keeping your screen clean or just clicking links or similar but they don't really compare very well and I bought a few reasonably expensive ones in the hopes they would.

Tried to find a link to show the differences but there actually isn't many comparisons this is the only one I could really find.

I am aware of how it works but if it is smaller than a finger it is more precise. I make fewer errors when typing on the screen keyboard for a smartphone. Yes, it works the same but it is smaller than my little finger and I can control it better. I would agree it is not nearly the same as a Wacom but better than nothing. YMMV.

Yes I can see it might be helpful for tapping at things like the keyboard and other similar tasks. I also concede some people just find it easier using something more like a pen.

A capacitive stylus works fine for annotating a PDF in the sense of underlining or highlighting a passage, and that's all I personally need. But it's really not accurate enough for handwriting; not small handwriting at least.

Walmart has a cheap 10 inch android tablet. $99. But it is a bit heavy.
I use a cheap from Amazon stylus on my Galaxy.
Now for my phone I use a combination pen, flashlight, laser, stylus. It is a bit heavier but great in the car. (Note I do not drive.) I think it was 2 for $5 at Amazon.

Actually for Windows 8 and up, you can set your wifi to metered mode. Which means that your win8 tablet will not download large files over your limited data plan.

Thanks, yes, but I've been told that metered mode sometimes causes other problems in your system. Not sure what they were, but when I read about them last week I decided to just hold up on 10 on my laptop until I see how it all shakes out.

PS - here are 2 sites talking about security and why metered mode is not so good. That's why I'm currently uncomfortable with W10. This might not be the right place to put this, but I'll try anyway:
