Well I replaced mine with a Note 12.2 the price was good and I wanted a bigger tablet because my LGG3 phone is already 5.5". I've actually started to prefer it over the 7" Nexus I used to have for reading simply because the dual page views in landscape feel more like a real book to me.
Something that size will never be as portable of course it's more like a laptop and to make matters worse I've bought a Logitech k810 keyboard for it so for all intents and purposes it really may as well be my laptop now. My first impression was it was a far better tablet but it likely would be bad to read on just due to size and weight but I'm starting to like the dual page layout it really isn't that bad at all and if you load a pdf or comic onto it then it shines because you don't have to mess about with zooming. Wow the battery listed is nearly 70 bucks, might as well just wait, save, and get whatever is best once this one finally stops holding it's charge at all.

I just got a Samsung Tab S 8.4 and so far I am loving it. It's great for both reading and web surfing. Web surfing on the Nexus was not as good. The sizes are not much different and the weight is a little less since I have the LTE Nexus. I got the 16 gb version since it has an sd card unlike the Nexus. I don't find the size a problem, but I rarely hold my devices. I use a cover that has felt inside so that when I lean it on my leg it stays and doesn't fall off.
My only issue so far is that I had to put the system font size to extra large because Samsung didn't do a good job of setting the dpi in non Samsung apps, and I have seen the same complaint from others. I plan to fix this by rooting and installing the Xposed App Settings module. Setting the system font size to extra large is only a problem in settings, but since Samsung has really strange sections in settings it makes it harder to figure out where things are because the font is so large words are cut off. I also found that the battery lasts much longer if I use dark themes. On the Nexus I got decent battery life either way, but it's not as good as it used to be. And it's a new toy! Nexus 7 size: Dimensions200 x 114 x 8.7 mm (7.87 x 4.49 x 0.34 in) Weight290 g (Wi-Fi), 299 g (LTE) (10.55 oz) Tab S 8.4 size: Dimensions212.8 x 125.6 x 6.6 mm (8.38 x 4.94 x 0.26 in) Weight298 g (10.51 oz) Edit: I just noticed I had the sizes labelled wrong Last edited by Purple Lady; 05-25-2015 at 03:52 PM. |

I know the op is looking at Android devices, but I just want to add the HP Stream 7 to the mix. It is available from the Microsoft Store for $79. I am surprised at how much I like it. It is very comfortable to read on. I mainly use the Nook app which will import DRM free epubs. The Kindle app is very limited in text options but works well. I have not had any luck getting Google Play books to load, but Calibre is very helpful. Overall, well worth the price.

No, I didn't have that problem any more than any tablet. The Nook, Kindle, Zinio, Overdrive, Kobo and Olive Tree apps all let you download items to use offline. Those are the main apps I use. I also can play solitaire and mahjong offline. If I want to use the news app or mail, of course you have to be online but that is true of any tablet. The Xbox video store will let you download movies to the SD card. Overall, I like the tablet alot.

Windows 8 has an app store. It is not near as big as the Apple and Google Play store but has been growing.

I was actually going to buy a small 7" windows tablet (linx 7) recently just out of pure curiosity and seeing what desktop apps I could run with it as I'd seen some videos of people loading old windows games on it. In fact that's actually the only thing about it that appealed to me plus the low cost meant it wasn't much of a risk.
But right before I went to buy one I saw an article that Microsoft are changing windows 10 to take the desktop ability away from tablets that size in fact it sounds like they will be stripped down to what RT was. So yeah they nearly got me then they did something really dumb and took away the only part that appealed to me anyway, so I guess they are resorting to bait and switch tactics now. |
