I use Kindles and occasionally will open the book to find it back one page or forward one page, which is not a big deal.

On a previous Kindle I remember where an up or down swipe, as opposed to a crossways swipe, would take you back to the beginning of the chapter or to the next chapter. I thought the Kindle was faulty until I read about the cause here in the forums. It was very annoying until I twigged to using "back" to get to the right spot

One think I would highly recommend is getting a new Reader because the screen on the screen on the 600 is not all that good. With a new Kobo Glo HD you can have a much nicer screen, more internal storage, and a very nice front light. Another plus is that because Kobo uses RMDSK (ADE), you can still read the very same eBooks as you do on the 600. Oh and the Glo HD is much lighter than the heavy 600.

The only time my Sony PRS-T1 has not opened on the last page I was reading is if I had to reset/force shutdown due to an error.

When I shut the reader off willingly, I set a bookmark just in case.

I suppose if you left the reader sitting unattended and left it to go to sleep/shut down on its own, something could touch the screen before it shuts down to change the page.

Things I have observed cause page changes if they land on the screen while reading - insect; hair; drop of water

A Kindle 3 / Kindle Keyboard would still meet that requirement, unfortunately you would need to get a used/refurbished one at this point since they aren't selling them new anymore. A Voyage has simulated physical page buttons as well but no audio. There is also the "sync to furthest read page" feature that may help, but you need to leave the wi-fi or 3G enabled to use that feature.

The only times I have run into this issue is if I am carrying it around without turning it off, cover open or closed, which is my fault not the e-readers. I would suggest making sure the reader is off anytime you set it down or decide to move places with it and see if that helps. I wouldn't rely on a magnetic switch in the cover to turn off the reader until you are SURE that is not the problem.

Are you putting the sony to sleep before closing the cover?

I just had a play on a 650 and you can push the buttons if you grip the cover over where the buttons are (proper sony cover), so if the reader is picked up where the buttons are you can change page (and holding down the page turn button on a sony flicks through pages quickly).

My Sony PRS 300 used to lose my page quite often. However since then I've owned various kindles (Keyboard, touch, paperwhite 1, paperwhite 2, Voyage), The nook simple touch and the Kobo mini/glo. None of these had any issues with remembering my page.

In my experience, Amazon's "like new" really is new. However, they sell them without warranty. This may mean, in practice, 90 days. See:

Also with physical page turn keys and audio/music-playing capability, and much cheaper, is a like-new original model Kindle:
