Well, my very first sentence said, "I love to read", so that's not the problem. And it's not boredom, because, as I already said, it happens even when I'm reading something exciting. And it's not posture either, because it doesn't matter what position I'm in---I've tried dozens, it still happens. And watching TV doesn't put me to sleep, only reading.

EDIT: also, as I said in my OP, this is a problem I've had my entire life, even in my teens, so it's not age or health related either. I think reading just relaxes me too much. I dunno.

How about your eyes, do you wear glasses? I used to get tired eyes from reading but not TV until I got glasses.

I do wear glasses (for distance), but I don't wear them while reading because I have perfect near vision. So I actually see close things better without my glasses.

Yes, I'm the same. Being extremely short-sighted I can't see something a metre away without my glasses, but I'm got a built-in magnifying glass for reading things really close-up.

Oh, one more thing. It can't be an eyesight issue, because reading info on websites or forum discussions doesn't make me sleepy. Only books. It must have something to do with how my brain processes it. Forums and websites are information. They don't relax me.

My case might be a little extreme, but I know it's not that uncommon for reading to be sleep inducing. I've heard people recommend reading to someone who's having trouble falling asleep. So that must mean reading is known to have that effect.

At any rate, I would love to know if there's a way we can train ourselves to stay awake longer while reading.

PS: the reason audiobooks are worse for me, is because I'm easily distracted while in auditory mode, so I have to sit still and shut my eyes, which is not good for staying awake.

Same here! My eyes feel like magnifying glasses to me, also. I can almost see the cell structure of my skin, lol. But a person's face is just a beige blob to me.

I think the main issue with non-fiction is that it doesn't tend to have the dynamic drive of fiction. A non-fiction book will have many disconnected items, each of which provides a natural stopping point at the end, and it's another act of will to start the next section from there. It's similar with short story collections, and with some novels.

A good page-turner will have no good place to stop. Nowhere you need another push to carry on. The big popular favourites tend to be this kind of book. Agatha Christie for crime, Bernard Cornwell for historical fiction, JK Rowling for children's fiction, Lois McMaster Bujold for SF, etc. They aren't necessarily the best written or deepest books in their fields, but they all tend to have that suspense and drive that means you never have to stop reading until you run out of pages.

What kind of different devices have you tried / does it change anything at all? As in have you tried to read on the computer, or on a backlit LCD screen, and is it exactly the same as reading on eInk or paper book?

I've sometimes noticed that when I'm tired (even when it's not bed time yet), I nod off far more easily with eInk or paper, compared to LCD (I just really don't like reading on LCD).

I use all types. Mostly e-ink Kindle---paperwhite now, but keyboard kindle before that. And I also use my Nexus tablet sometimes (LCD). And paper books, as well. All have the same results. The only difference I've ever noticed is that reading message boards doesn't affect me as much as reading books. But no difference between fiction and non-fiction.

I wonder if reading stimulates an ASMR response in you? This stands for autonomous sensory meridian response. Many youtubers deliberately try to create this to help viewers to sleep. A mild response will just feel like intense and pleasant relaxation which often leads to sleep, stronger responses involve tingling sensations in the scalp and spine leading to deep trance-like relaxation.

As you like reading, so you're not bored, and this has always been an issue, it may be worth googling asmr to see if it seems to be the likely culprit. If so, counter-stimulation, like loud rock music, might help.

Interesting! Thank you so much, BookCat. I will definitely look into that. +Karma

I've always thought it curious that informational reading (like when I'm reading up on techy forums) don't have the same sleepy effect on me as pleasure reading. One would normally think the opposite to be the case. But this would actually make sense under the ASMR theory.

Wow, I can't wait to look into this further.

Btw, I've never experienced a tingling sensation or anything, but the first response you mentioned sounds very familiar.

Like I said, there are times I've tried reading first thing in the morning--after a good night's sleep, a shower and cup of coffee--thinking I couldn't possibly get sleepy then, right? But sure enough...20 minutes or so, and out like a light.

I'd love to be able to read more however any more than 30 minutes at a time and I'm out like a light. Same with watching movies sometimes. I think it may be because I make myself too comfortable on the couch or in bed.
