My iPad will send and receive SMS messages. I can also send SMS messages by computer if it is connected via my Pocket Wifi modem. Any device that uses a SIM card seems to offer SMS services. My iPad and my portable hotspot both hve SIM cards with telephone numbers. My flat mate uses a Motorola Xoom for SMS.

There's lots of web-to-SMS gateways for sending SMS messages, and there is indeed Google Voice (which is what I use) and probably a few other services that will let you receive SMS directly as well, but can't just about all phones these days use an email address for messaging? Why not just use email?
