Love that phone!

I gave one to my wife. Her previous phone was too old and battery was broken. Now I want one as well.

Mine is the Galaxy SII.

The only thing I don't like too much is that uses a smallest SIM card.

Please keep your phone, you'll need it, trust me.

If you want a better one, I recommend you the Galaxy SII or Galaxy SIII. With contract, you can get one for 150 and 200, respectively, plus taxes. That's what I did for my wife.

We now chat using Google Talk and cam during lunch hours. ... And that's via 4G, no wifi.

My iPad will send and receive SMS messages. I can also send SMS messages by computer if it is connected via my Pocket Wifi modem. Any device that uses a SIM card seems to offer SMS services. My iPad and my portable hotspot both hve SIM cards with telephone numbers. My flat mate uses a Motorola Xoom for SMS.

Are you sure about that? The "iMessage" app on the iPad is not true SMS; messages can only be sent to other Apple devices, and not to other phones. Are there 3rd party apps which can send genuine SMS messages?

There's lots of web-to-SMS gateways for sending SMS messages, and there is indeed Google Voice (which is what I use) and probably a few other services that will let you receive SMS directly as well, but can't just about all phones these days use an email address for messaging? Why not just use email?

Exactly what I was suggesting in post #24... The "full" Google Voice isn't available anywhere except the US. The OP is in New Zealand. Email to sms works great, you just need to know the "gateway" such as "@fido.ca" for example... The email is sent to "phone#@fido.ca" and the recipient gets an sms on their phone, that they can then use to reply, which arrives into original sender's email inbox. All you need to know is your contact's service provider, look up the gateway and add to your contacts.
