I don't live in the US, so I can't try library lending myself. That's why I linked to one of the threads discussing downloading directly to a kindle without a computer. Since you posted in most of those threads as well, I assume you also read them? Maybe time for a re-read ![]() |

You can get a penguin book without using USB. You see once you check it out it puts the book in your archive items. Then you can read it on any Kindle you want even Kindle For PC. No PC needed to check out Kindle books. You just need to disable JavaScript to be able to continue from the Kindle browser.

It is front-lit. As it is also e-ink, it also cannot be back-lit, as the screen is opaque. A back-light shines from behind the screen into your eyes. A front-lit screen sits in front of the screen and shines down on the screen, rather than into your eyes. Back-lighting e-ink devices is impossible.

I have searched for, found, put in checkout, checked out, got for Kindle and downloaded a library book WITHOUT using a computer. I did all this on my Kindle 3. All I needed to do was disable javascript. Why is this so hard to accept? |

A number of folk here have already recommended the Kindle Touch, for reasons which are fine as far as they go. However, may I suggest you consider either the Kindle NT or the Kindle Keyboard instead. My reason is based on my having a number of books and a number of collections. I administer my library using Calibre, with the Kindle Collections plugin. This makes collection creation and maintenance a breeze, BUT for reasons known only to Amazon, the Kindle Touch cannot be controlled using this incredibly useful software. Amazon have made the collections mechanism in the Touch inaccessible to the Calibre/Kindle Collections combo, but it is still possible to use it for either the KNT or the KKB. I should not enjoy having to create my collections one book at a time! In my case, this is reason enough to prevent my buying either the Touch or the Fire. |

You don't have to create collections "one book at a time" on the Touch. Create the collection, go to it, and select "Add or remove books". You get a list of all the books on your reader, with a checkbox alongside each one. Just tap a book to add it to, or remove it from, the collection. It's very quick to do.

[QUOTE=BlueSky77;2126074]I borrow library books all the time in Kindle format and have never had to connect my Kindle Touch to my computer via usb. They download through amazon.com and are added to my library on my Kindle Touch through whispernet (either wifi or 3g).
It's possible that I've yet to borrow a Penguin book but all of the books that I've checked out from my library deliver wirelessly and do not need to be sideloaded. ____________________ I also borrow library books all the time on my Kindle 4 and Touch. Twice I was required to use a USB for download (as required by the publisher). Perhaps they were Penguin books. |
