Thinking of replacing Fire because of book collections
I hate hate that the Fire does not have book category/collection functions. DH bought me the Fire because I did not like using the Ipad for long term reading. If I returne the Fire, which Kindle should I get? All I really want to do is read on it, it must be easy to download library books and it must have the ability to create mutiple categories and sort/display by category.
Also, to return my Fire, all I need to do is deregister it and delete the few apps I added, correct? Deregistering will keep my books in the cloud but off the device, right? And Facebook, just sign out? The app came with the Fire so not sure it can be deleted. I did not set up my email accounts on the Fire. Anything else I should do? |

It wont erase anything from the cloud. I too hate there is no collections on the Fire but I've gotten used to it. This needs to be moved to the Kindle Fire forum. |

I wouldn't give up my Fire, I would keep it and get an eink Kindle, too. With the Touch only $99 I think I would get that one.

Thanks for the info on the factory reset, sounds easy enough. Please don't move to the Fire section though as I want opinions on the other Kindles.
booklover, the Fire is pretty to use as a tablet but still not as good as the IPad and since it's not good as a ereader (I do find it a little heavy also) I can't see keeping it. I can't imagine what I would use it for. |

Do you want an eink reader that can handle library eBooks without the need for a computer? If you do, you'd have to switch over to ePub via ADE (Adobe Digital Editions). |

mcdebbie, I don't have an ipad or other larger tablet to compare, but you might like having the smaller one for games/web etc, as it is more portable. Just think about it before you send it back.
I am obsessively checking Amazon, waiting for an announcement of the newest Kindle line up. Rumors point to July. I still check constantly. I hope they offer a new Kindle Touch with a black or graphite bezel. The current one looks ugly (to me) though there are some cases that cover the bezel. Still, I wait....the Kindle Touch is smaller and lighter than the Kindle Keyboard, and the e-ink touch screen is very nice. Many people (thousands, millions?) are hoping that Amazon WILL add a collections feature to the Fire. I think that would be awesome. I don't read a lot of novels on mine, but I enjoy looking at all the covers ![]() |

And readers like the Nook and others, that allow ADE books, don't those have to be loaded by USB? Other than the Sony T1, Kindle is the ONLY one that doesn't have to be side loaded via USB (except for those Penguin books) as far as I know. Last edited by booklover6; 06-22-2012 at 05:06 PM. |

I'm just asking what it is she wants to. There are two different choice. One is a T1 and not computer and the other is a Kindle Touch and a computer. If she wants to go with an eink Kindle, I'd say get the Kindle Touch. If she wants to move from the Kindle so she can have computer free eBook downloads from her local Library, then a T1 is it. |

You're right, she didn't say. I think I got it confused with a post I read elsewhere.
I hope Amazon makes a Touch that's like the Sony T1. That is really the best reader I have used. But it doesn't have the features I like about Amazon--the ability to email books to the reader, the archive backup, and other things. That's why I am eager to see if Amazon will update their Touch. The Sony would be perfect if it was tied to my Amazon account! And back to mcdebbie's OP, Yes the Kindle Touch has collections. But if you want folders and sub-folders, no. The T1, however, does, at least the way I use it. And it takes an SD card, so it holds far more books than the Kindle. I have my Sony set up (on the SD card) just like on my computer, with folders A-Z, and in each folder, Authors of that letter, and in some authors, sub-folders with different series. I love it. I don't think Kindle will be able to match that ability. |

I would get a Kindle Touch if I were you. The Kindle 4 Non-Touch is well and good for its price ($79 in the US with ads), but it lacks text-to-speech, MP3 compatibility, and has half the battery life and space compared to both the Kindle Touch and the Kindle Keyboard. If you're a heavy reader, or the sort to carry all of your books with you, you might come up against some frustrations.
The Kindle Touch and Kindle Keyboard are very similar in a lot of ways: the same size, the same battery life, the exact same screen, library lending via overdrive and Amazon Prime lending, a choice between wi-fi connectivity only or both 3G and wi-fi connectivity, the ability to make annotations and collections, et cetera. They differ in a few important areas, though, which might make you choose one over the other: The Kindle Keyboard does a full refresh every page turn. This means that the screen completely blacks out for a split second. Most people stop noticing this after using it for a while. On the Kindle Touch, you can choose whether to have the screen refresh every page turn, or every 6 page turns. Some people notice mild 'ghosting' of the letter without a refresh every page turn, but it's more common not to notice anything. The Kindle Touch supports KF8, whereas the Kindle Keyboard doesn't. There are no books that the Touch can read which the Keyboard can't, and KF8 doesn't add any new fonts - it helps with formatting, though, and to provide a slightly smoother ereading experience. The Kindle Touch is lighter in weight and smaller in size than the Kindle Keyboard. The Keyboard has a black bezel, whereas the Touch has a grey bezel. This can cause the contract on the Touch to appear 'washed out' when compared side-by-side to the Keyboard, but it's an optical illusion. The Touch is all touch-screen interface, obviously, whereas the Keyboard has a five-way controller, page turn buttons on either side of the screen, and a physical keyboard. The on-screen keyboard for the Touch works just as well as the physical keyboard on the Keyboard. Those are the two best eink Kindles that Amazon currently offers, and as I said before, I'd recommend that you get the Touch. It's better than the Keyboard in many aspects. Good luck! I have to agree. If you want a Kindle, the Touch is the best one Amazon offers.

I use my Fire every night to read on. I don't find it heavy at all. It easier for me to hold than my K3. Why I use Kindles is because of the personal documents cloud. I can sync my book and read it on any of my Kindles. I currently have 3 Kindles. The K3 is the better out of the bunch. The K4 I own is the one I use most though due to its size.
I don't see me getting a Touch due to how picky I am on the fonts. I can use custom fonts on my K3 and K4. I use Trebuchet on the Fire. I don't like Caecilia. I am slightly interested in the new Kindle with Light built into it but it needs to be more than a Kindle Touch to entice me. |

So are you all saying that with the Kindle Touch and/or keyboard I would have to download the local library books via the computer? On the Fire I can just send them to my device. I would not like that. Loved my Sony 505 but don't want to go back to hooking up to the computer to download books. So glad I did not rush out and return it this morning. I think I might could live without collections for now since I get 90% of my books from the library.
