On public transport or in cafes I prefer to see what other people are reading, but don't like others to see what I am reading.
I have no desire to rationalize these preferences.

Not erotica, but I was glad no one could see a 50+ year old man reading "Jane Eyre"

I just knew someone would say that sooner or later.

I never did care what anyone thought about what I was reading, so I have no problem if anyone sees. I always have a book in the car, one of my devices in my bag, and my Clip with an audiobook with me. My bedroom & bath has speakers so I just plug in the Clip and listen while getting ready to go out or to bed. Most people have just given up asking me what I am reading, as I jump around genres a lot and I don't happen to be reading the "new, best, fantastic, every-one-is-reading-it" book.

No, I don't use my Kindle to hide what I read.

Nope! In fact, I just last night posted pictures of my screen onto facebook to show others how I've organised it, and to ask for further book recommendations! I am all too happy to show off what I'm reading.

Unless I'm on public transport - in which case I prefer a reader to hide that I'm reading because people seem far too comfortable with touching my books and asking about them if I'm reading from paper.

my sister once asked me what i was reading, and i hesitated a bit (i was reading a gay erotica at the time) so i decided to just fling a genre at her and said i was reading bdsm. i don't think she asked again, though when i brought up the topic of 50 shades and bdsm, she finally asked what bdsm was.

My in-laws were surprised to see a lot of so-called YA Fiction on my e-reader instead of the latest Wilbur Smith or whatever. I'm 40+. So, I'm not in that "book club"! I'm not really bothered about it though. I was ever so thrilled to finally be abled to purchase Tad Williams Tailchaser's Song in e-book form recently. This is one of the classics for me, including Harry Potter & David Eddings collections among them.
Seriously, there are some really good YA Fiction, cropping up lately. I'm currently reading Jennifer Nielsen's The False Prince. So, am I using the e-reader to "hide" my reading habit? Kind of

There's stuff that's much better when read.
Of course reading erotica as ebooks has advantages: you can read one-handed

While I don't use my e-reader to "hide" what I am reading, I am kind of glad for the extra privacy. Kind of like I am glad people text (mostly) on buses rather than verbally subjecting all the passengers to their drama on cell phones.

I kind of like to stick to my own business in a public setting but I am well aware that not everyone is the same way.

The most "embarrassing" thing I have on mine is an erotic novel and a book by VI Lenin.
I wouldn't want my colleagues to know I am reading it, or the majority of my friends, but I couldn't say I am massively embarrased about it either.

I prefer that the cover of the book I'm reading is hidden and I put the reader to sleep before setting it down - not to "hide" what I'm reading, but sometimes the images and language aren't appropriate for the eyes of curious kids.

Well, I meant something on the OUTSIDE of the reader. I put my readers inside covers to protect them from me...
