On public transport or in cafes I prefer to see what other people are reading, but don't like others to see what I am reading.

I have no desire to rationalize these preferences. |

![]() I never did care what anyone thought about what I was reading, so I have no problem if anyone sees. I always have a book in the car, one of my devices in my bag, and my Clip with an audiobook with me. My bedroom & bath has speakers so I just plug in the Clip and listen while getting ready to go out or to bed. Most people have just given up asking me what I am reading, as I jump around genres a lot and I don't happen to be reading the "new, best, fantastic, every-one-is-reading-it" book.

In fact, I just last night posted pictures of my screen onto facebook to show others how I've organised it, and to ask for further book recommendations! I am all too happy to show off what I'm reading.Unless I'm on public transport - in which case I prefer a reader to hide that I'm reading because people seem far too comfortable with touching my books and asking about them if I'm reading from paper.

My in-laws were surprised to see a lot of so-called YA Fiction on my e-reader instead of the latest Wilbur Smith or whatever. I'm 40+. So, I'm not in that "book club"! I'm not really bothered about it though. I was ever so thrilled to finally be abled to purchase Tad Williams Tailchaser's Song in e-book form recently. This is one of the classics for me, including Harry Potter & David Eddings collections among them.

Seriously, there are some really good YA Fiction, cropping up lately. I'm currently reading Jennifer Nielsen's The False Prince. So, am I using the e-reader to "hide" my reading habit? Kind of

While I don't use my e-reader to "hide" what I am reading, I am kind of glad for the extra privacy. Kind of like I am glad people text (mostly) on buses rather than verbally subjecting all the passengers to their drama on cell phones.

I kind of like to stick to my own business in a public setting but I am well aware that not everyone is the same way. |

The most "embarrassing" thing I have on mine is an erotic novel and a book by VI Lenin.

I wouldn't want my colleagues to know I am reading it, or the majority of my friends, but I couldn't say I am massively embarrased about it either. |

I prefer that the cover of the book I'm reading is hidden and I put the reader to sleep before setting it down - not to "hide" what I'm reading, but sometimes the images and language aren't appropriate for the eyes of curious kids.
