I held out to the IPad 3. I wanted a tablet, I looked at the Android ones. I was not happy with what I could get there. I looked at my friends who play stupid games that I like and they all had IPad's. I finally bought an IPad.

A part of me hates myself for doing it but the silly thing just works and works well. (shrugs)

I did laugh when I loaded the Kindle App, I got a pop up window asking me if I wanted to download IBooks and I said no. I think the IPad sighed a sad sigh.

This.

I own several Apple devices, including an iPhone and a brand spanking new Fondleslab, and am pretty satisfied with them (I'm considering having the iPad surgically attached). But I don't try to delude myself by believing that Apple is a different kind of company than any other trying to make a buck. They happen to make some devices which fit specific needs (wants) I have. But they fall far, far short in some other categories, so I have other, different devices. And when I sleep, all my devices come to life and slug it out in the living room.

No diatribe, just legitimate discussion. And yes there are other computers, phones etc. out there that are trying to compete with Apple hoping to avoid their legal threats. When Apple sues the competition over such frivolous things like App Store (e.g. GetJar & Amazon) or whether the tablet they make is rectangular and flat they are obviously trying to block these companies from competing with them.

Perfect example: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/a...75?tag=nl.e550

These are not insults but reported facts. FYI, I own some Apple products and it saddens me to see the road the company has gone down.

Xerox's work on the GUI was also heavily influenced by Doug EngelBart's Augmentation Research Center at the Stanford Research Institute.

The only thing that article says is that they got a tour and a demo in exchange for being allowed to buy stock.

They were allowed to buy stock *before* Apple went public. Apple went public the next year and the $1 million in stock became worth about $20 million.

You are correct. I was being sarcastic. I use some Apple stuff but if I am a fan of anything in a silly way it is not Apple that does it for me. Apple is just another company although massively successful.

I agree with this. I have IPod's and now an IPad. What I buy from Apple, I buy because it works well and easily and quickly. I spent the better part of 6 months trying to find an alternative to the IPad because I am not a huge fan of some of Apple's policies. Failing to find something roughly equivalent and the right price point I sucked it up and bought the IPad. 1 hour later, I had downloaded a bunch of apps and was happily enjoying myself.

I am the same way with Amazon. I buy from Amazon because they have made it easy to do so and they are pretty affordable. I like the ease of using my Kindle and buying books.

Apple and Amazon are companies. They are doing what they can to increase their profit margins and expand their business. That is what busnisses do. They are not good and they are not evil, they are organizations trying to maximize profits. (shrugs)
