Since acquiring a Kindle 2 in Nov 2009, I have started to read again -- voraciously, like I did as a teenager ("voracious" for me is about a novel a week). Moving through a Kindle 3 and a couple of Kobos has increased the investment in hardware while keeping pace in ebook buying. All of this is money I was not spending before on books; this cash comes out of other entertainment budgets (like DVDs/Blu-ray which I have stopped buying).

I still haven't bought Louise Penny's latest A Trick of the Light because, with taxes, it's over $15. Six months after release, it's still hard cover only and over $20 ... so the ebook is a bargain. The trade paperback is coming out in mid-July at $17 and hopefully that means the ebook will drop somewhat. It's the seventh novel in the series and I haven't read all the others yet ... so I can afford to wait ... and I will.

I acquire occasional freebies, read occasional titles from Mobile Read, or public domain titles from Gutenberg, Kobo or elsewhere, and make use of the public library through Overdrive ... but most of the books I have paid something for and purchased though Amazon or Kobo. On balance I am sure the cost of the books I have read averages closer to $5 than $10.

The problem is there are so many interesting novels out there to sample, my eyes are bigger than my belly: my TBR pile continues to grow. I have about four years in the queue as it is. *sigh*

And to the point of the OP: I have certainly not become Parsimonious since buying an e-reader ... I am still SensualPoet.

I really have no qualms about buying an ebook that falls within the same range as a new paperback--and since I used to buy about 90% of my PBs used, that means I'm actually spending more than I did before.

I also have no qualms about spending more than PB price to get an ebook delivered at midnight on the day of release for certain authors...(just sixteen more days until the next J.D. Robb). These are the types of authors I would have gladly bought in hardcover the minute Barnes & Noble had a copy available--not because I preferred the HC, but because I wanted to read them right away. And the discount usually available on those new release HCs brings the price to just about or just above what I now pay for the ebook version.

Worst of all, I've discovered so many new-to-me authors from the Big Six through ebooks (both promotions and word of mouth) that I'm probably buying more books than ever. That "first in the series free for a limited time only" thing was sheer brilliance on the part of the marketing guru who came up with it. It's not "free" when I then end up buying all the rest of the books in the series...and then discover even more authors based on recommendations from others who also loved this one!

So while some of you may have become parsimonious/frugal/cheap on that front, not everyone has.

I'm not willing to spend as much for ebooks for a few reasons. The biggest one, is that I'm not getting the same product. I have nothing tangible, just a digital copy and a license to use that with a bunch of restrictions. I can't really loan it out to friends. I can't even have my ebooks on all of my own devices.

I mean, I've always looked for cheap books, because of how fast I read, and what I can afford overall on books, but I am cheaper on ebooks.

Smile I didn't wait for my reader to be parsimonious.

Let's face it, you paid for that reader, You get the convenience of carrying a library around almost where ever you go, and (in many cases) you cac download a new book in seconds.
But I want my money's worth from my gadgets. When I buy (bought) a dead-tree book, all I needed in addition was a place to read it (coffee/mocha, fireplace and a kitty optional). I paid a price for my Nook, and I love it, but one of the features is that ebooks are generally less expensive than printer matter.
I balk at e-books that cost the same as their paperback equivalents, and refuse to buy the rare ones that actually cost more than the printer books. That's not being cheap IMO, that's using money wisely.
As far as being parsimonious, I would point out that I am reading more than I was before I got my reader, and that translates to purchasing more books, and more money spent.

I've got a house full of hard cover books as well as trade paperbacks. It always seemed more enjoyable to read a book at that size than the paperback. Needless to say I bought paperbacks as well. Hardcovers purchases decreased significantly when I got the iPad mostly books I wanted to share with my wife. Now, I read books on the iPad, the iPhone, and a Kindle Touch and I just can't see myself buying very many paper books in the future.

Like many others, I have been enjoying low cost and free offerings from Amazon. Also, like many others, I've found some books in serious need of an editor. I am no longer willing to pay"full price" for a paper book. I do expect to see a discount for an e-version of a book but am willing to pay more than the margin bin price for a well written and well edited book.

Yes, the Amazon model has introduced me to authors I will seek out and follow as well as authors I will avoid. It is nice to sample both those two types at a lower cost. One of the side effects of e-reading is that I have been reducing my collection of paper books by sharing them with friends or with our local Goodwill store. Having a "stack" of e-books has made it easier to say good-bye to some old friends.
