If you know to look for it, and take the time to do so. It'd trip up a lot of people still, because they wouldn't expect it, or take the time to care.

Or it could just be a hash code, meaningless to anyone who can't decode it,
and very hard to spot in the binary code of the file.

It is only the person uploading the file who would need to know how.

ePubs are basically just html files in a zip wrapper.
Unzip them, and there is no binary code.

To protest this legislation, Wikipedia is taking their encyclopedia offline for 24 hours starting tonight at midnight (Eastern Standard time). A number of other popular websites are following suit.

And going back to my point, if things work without having to do anything, how many would care enough to take care of it?

O'Reilly books are DRM free, but watermarked, and it is easy to find pirated copies of their books with the watermarks intact. A while back, there was a discussion over this, and people were finding tons of books online still with the watermarks. The people who uploaded them didn't bother to remove them.

Maybe I'll get to sleep at a decent time tonight, then. The last couple-few nights, I've been up WAY too late stuck in a wiki-loop going from article to article.

Hopefully the protest will bring a little more attention to the matter.

SOPA not dead, merely postponed

Here is a press release by the US House of Representatives concerning SOPA:

Stop Online Piracy Act Markup to Resume in February

Washington, D.C. - House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) today said that he expects the Committee to continue its markup of the Stop Online Piracy Act in February.

Chairman Smith: "To enact legislation that protects consumers, businesses and jobs from foreign thieves who steal America's intellectual property, we will continue to bring together industry representatives and Members to find ways to combat online piracy.

"Due to the Republican and Democratic retreats taking place over the next two weeks, markup of the Stop Online Piracy Act is expected to resume in February.

"I am committed to continuing to work with my colleagues in the House and Senate to send a bipartisan bill to the White House that saves American jobs and protects intellectual property."

I am quite aware of the construction of ePub as well as many other file
formats. It may come as a shock to you but all these files are composed
of binary code. Yes even purely text files.

Its also a system that's fairly unobtrusive to the reader.
Sadly, I could imagine this could be maliciously changed to point the finger at someone else.

I had a friend in college tell me when he was a bored teenager in a small town, he'd steal the magazine postcard inserts from the local store's magazine rack and sign up his "enemies" for magazine subscriptions. I actually had that done to me (I suspect by neighbors I'd called the cops on) in the last few years.

Imagine today's digitally savvy teens...I could imagine them uploading a few hundred books with their "hated neighbor's" name in them!

Teens don't need internet access. IMO, nobody under 18 should. Teens lack the responsibility and accountability to be given access to the internet. In fact, the only thing they seem to be able to properly handle is four hours of homework every night and maybe offline video games.

Obama will veto SOPA if it makes it that far.
