I upgraded from the 650 to the T1. Like many, I never thought that I would need wifi on my ereader. However, now that I have it, I can't live without it. It just makes things easier. I use Calibre and transfer books via wifi with the content server. Other than wifi, the reader wifi is just a better e-ink reader than the 650 in my opinion. The screen has better contrast, the additional fonts are great, and the battery life is much better (I have strange battery issues in standby with my 650). Personally, I don't see the point in getting a 650 over a T1.

Wait - the cool thing about the browser isn't checking email or "surfing the web" on eink - it's having the ability to browse different epub stores and download books directly to your device!!
I was immediately sold on it when I was being lazy laying in bed, I wanted a specific book to read, and was able to go into the browser and download it directly to my device. So it has been pretty useful in my experience.. And I've also had both the Kobo touch and T1, and greatly prefer the T1. The plastic casing on the Kobo felt hollow somehow, and the dictionary absolutely pales in comparison to the T1... |

When all that is needed for basic usage is right there on the device, it has me rolling out the carpet for it. And this is coming from someone who likes transferring files via USB. I have a netbook for websurfing (it is my main computer). I've never used a mobile phone or driven a car, but I love the convenience of being able to press "Library" on my T1 and downloading the book straight from the device without a fancy song and dance. |

Right, I understand that benefit, of directly downloading books from the web onto the T1.
It is a fantastic feature. |

Another benefit of Wi-fi on the T1 is that I use it to look-up words in a book in Wikipedia or a Google search. It helps me understand more about the people, places and events that I am reading about.

See!! I told you so. ![]() Perhaps it wasn't made clear enough in this thread but you can buy from the Kobobooks online store with your Sony. With the T1 you can even shop in bed as someone already said. With Sony being epub means you can buy from any epub bookstore, even the Kobo. I don't know your finances obviously. Only you would but for me, I'd go with the newer technology just because. I didn't see the big deal with not having the wifi when my 350 was my primary reader but now having the T1 and access to buy & borrow from my library - I love it!! Scenario that may or may not have relevance for you. You're away on vacation and you get email notice that a book you've been on a waiting list for finally comes up. You don't have your computer and won't be back in time for the 3 days it's being held for you. You're stuck. You're not getting the book. You have to wait till you get home & get back on the tail end of the waiting list. With a T1, you run to a quick hotspot or use the hotel's wifi, sign into the library & voila! You've got the book you've been waiting for. ![]() |

It seems to be cheaper to get a T1, especially when they go on sale.
Im still set on a 650 though. Astac EZ Reader Pocket Pros can be had new for $55 shipped! Although, they dont pick up on the Calibre tags like the Sony's. Ill probably get on of those, and keep an eye out of a nice Sony 650 (and a Jetbook Lite). PS - I did realize that you can shop Kobo. Im learnin' !!! Be careful of some readers though. My friend's hubby just bought her an Aluratek Libre Air for $60. eeek! Horrible unit. Lousy battery life, font changing ability only works on TXT files not epub. .... well that's purposeless isn't it!

The EZ Reader and Jetbook Lite are pretty well liked. I also have my eye on a Pocketbook 360+! |

I got the T1 not only for the features I knew it had, (which my Kobo Touch lacked), but it was on massive pre-Christmas sale at a lot of places.
I did not buy mine on line, but I did get it on sale for a bit more than all the on-line sales. I had to buy it in person and the store had a 30 day returns policy. I was prepared to spend a bit more ONLY if it meant that it quenched my needs in one go. I had had enough of buying whatever was cheapest only to have to spend far more money down the road to get my real needs met. Lucky for me, I had the right sale at the right time of getting gift money from family. It was worth spending the little extra to know that my long term needs are met, thus it eventually pays for itself. I have no experience with the other readers listed here. But in the end each person will know from experience which needs each device meets better than others. |

I vote PRS-T1
I had a B&N Nook First Edition that my brother gave for my birthday ( He has a 950 which he loves). It was a nice reader, particularly with the large screen. I would have been happy with it forever, but someone else decided they liked it better than I did. Bummer. Generous soul that he is, my twin thought I might like a T1 for Christmas. It came via FedEx and landed on my porch Monday before Christmas. Gotta say it beats the Nook hands down. The screen is brighter and the contrast is far better. Not sure I like the smaller package, but its growing on me. Being the techno-nut that I am, one of the first things I did was root it. One thing I hated about the nook was that even rooted there wasn't much you could do with it. Really, the only thing I wanted, it couldn't do. I wanted a fairly comprehensive PDA suite for it. This not a problem with the T1. I found several apps and after trying them out, I stuck with DejaOffice. After playing around with it for a little over a week, I find I really like the T1. I LOVE the tag organization. I love computers, but I have better things to do rather than sitting around building complex directory structures. I had read in one review that the T1 was "flimsy". It's not milspec, but it is far from flimsy. It is incredibly light weight. I can (and do) sit with it in my hand for hours. I am on disability, so I can't afford to buy many books, however Project Gutenberg offers thousands of great books just for the downloading, and the Baen Free Library quenches my thirst for Science Fiction. All in all, I give the the Sony PRS-T1 4 1/2 stars. The only thing I don't like is its inability to sync my calendar with Google Calendar. Its a great reader that I will keep for a long time, and highly recommend to anyone who asks.

Good review slvrsplsh. After reading on the T1 for several days, I am not sure I love the fonts that come with it. So far, I've been switching between Amasis and Neuvo, however it is spelled. I may try changing the default font when I have time to play around with the T1 on the computer.

I installed it and it works fine. Calendar opens, but as I don't use google calendar, I can't say, whether it syncs. Maybe you can give it a try and report back? |
