Yeah, I would also like to support alternatives to Amazon/B&N.
How does the Sony Store compare to the Kobo Store? |

The e-book store? The e-book store is better laid out, search functions are better, and so far, I like the simplicity in buying books. I also was able to download the books I previously purchased from kobo, onto the T1.

Wifi, Android based vs Linux, and more text personalizinf on T1. The 650 can use prs + and get additional fonts etc so that really is a moot point. I have a 350 and find I dont need Wifi and I can care less about android on my reader.

Does the 650 have a browser? I'm not convinced I need one.
How about Calibre integration? What are the benefits of Android, real or potential? |

No browser on the 650.
I think the T1 is a fantastic device and that it is a better overall ereader, for the vast majority of people. I think Im going a bit retro and getting a 650, though....especially if I can pick it up used/refurb for a significantly cheaper price. |

Calibre integration? It's not integrated (whatever that should be) but perfect usable:
Plug in your reader and fill it over Calibre. Browser: no browser on PRS-X50 readers. Cause there is no WIFI. I guess you will use the browser if there is one. And doesn't need it when there is none. I for my part have the Sony 350 (very similiar to the 650) and never ever 'needed' a browser. Concerning Android there should be a couple of applications you could use with the T1. But as a device built to read books and not playing Angry Birds (I pressume you want to read books) I'm convinced that the PRS650 & PRS+ is unbeatable. A. |

For me, the wifi library is what gets me completely giddy. Five minutes ago, I just borrowed Carol Shields Unless from my public library without having to leave my house or download to my computer. I simply hit the "public library" button, selected my library, looked for the book, saw it was available and hit "download", now for the next 3 weeks I can read it. (I am allowed up to 20 titles at a time). To me it is sweet.
And I've done all my sideloading via calibre. It manages my books well. So far in the 2 weeks I've owned this I've discovered more things that make it more delightful to me. The browser capabilities are very basic and suit my bookreading needs. I have no desire to play "Angry Birds" on it, or anything other than download books I've bought or borrowed. For me, it's worth the price because the search is over for a reader that does this plus that in the e-reading universe. The T1 also plays mp3 files but I haven't even explored that. I also got a Sansa Clip+ this month for Christmas and that meets all my listening needs. So if anyone asks me what it sounds like, I'm as ignorant as they come, because I am too lazy to drag my earbuds out to plug in to see. My e-reading is entirely about the visual. I had to laugh when I saw one review complain that it was not in color. I couldn't care less. I just want my books, and I want an e-reader that doesn't constantly change in how it works (the Kobo Touch I gave to my husband constantly has new features added and stuff.) The T1 is for me something I can see being happy with over the long term. Last edited by spindlegirl; 12-28-2011 at 02:04 PM. |

Yeah, I can see the benefits and understand the attraction of the T1.
However, I am looking more for a basic ereader, and dont mind transferring books via SD cards. I would also like to learn Calibre. I have a Nook Color running Android 2.3 CM7 Gingerbread for email and wireless browser news, etc. That thing is sweet! Last edited by EscapeVelocity; 12-28-2011 at 02:39 PM. |

I would say: Go for the 650. You will not regret it.
Wifi: makes me feel big brother is watching... so I definitely wanted a reader without it. Personalization: with proper configured PRS+ (in particular with future releases) you'll have way more personalization abillities than with the T1 or many other readers. A. |

I can understand the basic needs. Even without using the Wifi I like how it treats the sideloaded books. Most of the time the wifi is turned off except for borrowing the library books. Every other reader I have had has required the use of Windows to borrow library books. Since we don't use Windows, I wanted to borrow books wirelessly. That's about as big brother as I will allow, because the library knows what my account uses to borrow anyway.
And definitely use calibre. My use of Calibre is actually what made me want the Sony because it just seems so compatible. I've never had the 650, but the 650 sounds like something I would have preferred to get instead of the Kobo which I had used previous to the t1, which in comparison is sheer heaven. Because I consider my needs to be pretty "basic". (Sideloaded books get treated the same as bought books, Collection organization dictated entirely by the user, Free magazine sources get treated the same way bought magazines would get treated.) ETA: In other words, the browser is actually the least of my needs. Nice to have for the few purposes I would need to use it for, but I am not a "social" reader. Most of my books are put on via USB plug in and put on from Calibre. I just think it is sweet that if I tag something on Calibre, and then transfer it to the Sony, the sony actually reads those tags and puts it in the appropriate collection.
