I was using Espresso but this time I got some Kintamani...direct from Bali to Yahava. Sweet, silky and smooth, yet with bold underlying flavours. Well that's what it says on the packet, haven't tried it yet.

I tried the K-Cups but they make extremely weak coffee, more like coffee flavored water. If you want a good cup of pre-ground coffee that you can make yourself, I recommend Lavazza espresso and a Bialetti stove-top coffee maker. I tried for years to find that perfect cup of coffee that I could make myself, Lavazza and Bialetti are the ticket for me...

P.S. The Bialetti coffee maker you want for one cup of coffee is the 3-cup version, it actually makes about 3/4 of a cup so there is room left for the creamer.

There are many ways to make an excelent cup of coffee. BUT, there is one thing that they all lack, the house filling aroma of coffee brewing.

Although my wife doesn't like the taste of coffee, she doesn't mind the smell of coffee. So she bought me an electric coffee percolator for a birthday present.

It percked the coffe for such a short time that there was no aroma comming out of the spout. It was almost exactly like drip coffee. Not bad in it's self. Just uninteresting. She then ordered a stovetop perculator.

Now I can enjoy the full aroma and flavor of the coffee on the weekends. People who drip or plunge will never know how good it is to fill the house with the aroma of hot coffee. It's exactly like bread. Bread in a wrapper from the store is fine. Fresh baked bread from the oven is GREAT!

I know that few will go so far as to buy one, but there are only two rules; NOT aluminum, and NOT electric even if you can adjust the time that it takes to perk.

At home, I grind my beans and make one (mammoth) cup at a time. I don't want coffee that's been sitting on a hot plate and coffee makers don't make it hot enough. I want it scalding. Ah!

But the coffee at work is positively foul, so for days when I'm flagging I've found that Starbucks Via French Roast is entirely acceptable. Nuke some water, add the powder, and you've got a palatable cuppa. It's not cheap, but why skimp on life's blood? I always have a few packets in my purse.

My mum has a percolator which is very much like, or is, this Corning Ware one:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/72963623...nflower-10-cup

It bubbling away on the stove is one of my earliest memories, and the smell of coffee always triggers an image of it in my head. I recall we'd sit down to lunch and it would come out and we'd all have coffee from it served with milk and pouring cream (I used to just use the cream ). This was a common, though not regular thing (maybe once a fortnight or month), as instant coffee was what was standard in our household.

To be honest, I liked its strength, and aroma, but was never too mad about its taste. I am the same now with filter and plunger too. I'd rather them than instant now, but for my tastes espresso is my brew of choice.

But now I want to buy a percolator.

Cheers,
Marc

It's real easy to find great coffee - just keep buying and tossing (or giving) away until you find the one you like. There's always someone who'll take free (albeit open) coffee.

Another bit of wisdom (and now I'm all out of wisdom) is that even the right coffe can be made wrong, or in such a way that you're bound to dislike it.

I like a mild coffee perked slow and long. Strong/mild coffee in other words.

Stephen Fry gave Prince Charles this coffee as a wedding present - not sure what he was trying to say...

I tried it.
Very nice. Really. I even persuaded quite a few people to try it.
You can buy a cup of this stuff here in my little town, in a specialised Coffee/Chocolate shop, and the price was surprisingly low. Less than what you would pay for a fancy latte at Starbucks. (The nearest Starbucks is, thank God, several hundreds kilometres away)

So I'm looking at beans and the prices floored me. Why does something that I have to do myself cost so much more than the already processed kind? Is it simply better coffee than whats sold on the mass market?
Colombian guy here ...

Coffee's price in USA is driven by several factors, including "brand". But based on what my mom told me and what I've seen in Colombia, making coffee old fashion way, should be more expensive and supposedly, tastes better.

But the fact is that, if you keep it on a container, like a ceramic one, and you close it, it should keep its flavor. Don't keep it in the original can.

Cans are bad! bad! for coffee and drinks. They do not retain original flavor of coffee or drinks. Ceramic containers are better, same for glass! Ceramic and glass composition makes it fragile but also immune to absorb odors and other particles, at least, not so easy.

Just to give you an idea. In Colombia, we still drink Coca Cola in regular glass bottles. People started complaining about flavors so Coca Cola put it back on the market. Now, I'm sure there are maybe other reasons why they did that, but cans do not keep original flavors of food, for sure.
