Stupid Question...
When you plug in your Kobo and it offers you "keep reading" or "Manage Library", will it charge if you choose neither??

Seems like there are a LOT of ways to corrupt the Kobo DB. It would be nice if someone from Kobo were to post officially in this forum to offer advice.
When I get my replacement Kobo, it seems like the only safe thing to do is just read the 100 free books on it... and never plug it in to a computer. Hmmm... |

i have side loaded over 200 epubs to my wife's kobo, both to the internall memory and the 4gb SD card i put in it. I have sideloaded over 800 to my mom's kobo, once again to internal and the SD. aside from the one glitch in my wife's kobo, neither has had another issue. my wife has been using hers for 5 months now, and my mom for over 3. the real key to being happy with any piece of technology is to have a realistic understanding of its potential and limitations. When i bought the kobo for her, i knew that the screen wasnt as crisp as the k3, and that pageturns would be slower. I also knew that i did not want a g3 radio in it, and i had to have support for epub. therefore, i went for the kobo, knowing it's limitations. it is a very simple, stable reader. just don't expect it to be a kindle or a nook, because it isnt. |

So... what is the safest way to sideload.
Some people swear by Calibre. Some, by ADE. I have a batch of epubs on my SD card and when I get my replacement Kobo, I want to make sure that I add them properly. And I think... one at a time. And what is the preferred method of those online to disconnect from the computer under XP? Before I sent mine back this morning, I hooked up one last time... then went in through My Computer and right clicked on the Kobo to eject. Well all that did was change it from a Kobo, to a removable disk drive. So then I had to go back down to the system tray and disconnect from there. Shouldn't require two steps IMHO. What works best for those of you in the know? |

i always eject the device from calibre - it seems to properly unmount the drives every time.

While using Calibre, somehow it was unable to load books onto the main Kobo itself... even though it claimed that it was uploading to the device, once unhooked the books never showed up on the device itself. However it DID upload to the SD card.
Strange, huh? |

quite possibly, your Kobo could have had some bad blocks on the internal memory. that would account for the issues you have had sideloading to main memory and unmounting the drives.
a partially corrupted DB could explain it also, or a combination of the 2. ed: another thought - could possibly be the USB port or cable as well. XP and the power management of USB hosts can get flakey sometimes, i see it at work all the time. I am constantly replacing USB mice & keyboards, just to have them come back and work fine on a different machine. Last edited by mikegetz; 05-24-2011 at 12:01 PM. |

The only problems I ever had with the Kobo and corruption can be directly traced to the use of Calibre so you could say I swear at Calibre. Since I stopped using it for sideloading I've had zero, nil, nada, no problems. I only use Calibre to convert from other formats. Even then I still swear at it for the trash it inserts into the HTML that I then have to remove via Sigil. I mean, really, isn't
good enough? You don't need
for every freaking paragraph. It always amuses the number of posts I read that essentially say "I sideload e-books via Calibre and now my Kobo is corrupted. Kobo is at fault. Why won't Kobo tell me how to fix things" or variants thereof. Isn't "ejecting" strictly for CD/DVD drives? I'd figure you'd use the "safely remove hardware" icon in the system tray. I don't have a Windows box at home to try this out though. |

Again... some folks have recommended that you right click on the Kobo in explorer and choose "Eject".
I have used that... and it seems to me that it used to work for a while... Funny how different people have such different experiences with their Kobo while using the same software (ADE, Calibre, etc). I have all my Calibre converted books on the SD card. I think I will play it safe and just add them one at a time as I am ready to read them. Although I have yet to figure out how the safest manner to add them is! lol |

Actually, that's for pretty much any storage device that is connected to a windows computer. Including CD/DVD drives, flash drives, external hard drives, etc. and includes devices such as the Kobo and my Jetbook Lite as well.

I use Calibre to load everything. I only load to the Kobo main memory, I don't have an SD card. I also use Calibre to eject the Kobo and I've never had a problem.
I other thing I'd add is to always stay up-to-date with Calibre, it seems there's an update every time I use Cailbre, which is probably weekly. |
