Hee! This thread reminds me of Mae West:
"When I'm good, I'm very good. But when I'm bad, I'm better." O Canada I love you when you're bad... ![]() |

I knew it Canada was evil, if the USA says so, we must blindly believe it and accept it lest the US decides to invade Canada to "spread democracy" LOL
But lucky for canadians, the US is busy killing Bin Laden, bombing Iraq, Afghanistan and so on. I'm sure the children who get bombed realize they die for the sake of freedom and accept it (and not to protect certain lobbies and oil consortiums, of course not). By the way dear US of A, if you ever plan to look for the real organizer of 9/11, know (though the highest levels of power do know), that the bearded guy you guys got though a dangerous person no doubt, is not the guy behind the whole thing, look at home, south, somewhere in Texas (I think that's where he lives these days) You could have gotten him in D.C. a few years ago, he had a job there for about 8 years but you missed him there ... And finally Canada you must take a lesson in democracy from big brother of the south because a country with basically only 2 choices of vote both part of the right spectrum of politics only representing the rich and the richer (Reps / Dems) is obviousy in a good position to speak of democracy and political choice when it comes to voting. |

That Canada’s DRM law is at the bottom of the list is, to me, a good thing.
There are people afraid of loosing control of their product (ebooks in this case) and want protection (DRM). That's fine with me. I'll just buy less of their products and more of those without DRM. An anti-DRM stand should be a personal choice. My objection is when they pass laws that let them use the government to pulverize some poor smuck for downloading some pirated music, books, or even a few programs. And all governments do have copyright protection in one form or another. That's life. There are more important things to worry about, and better ways to use your time on earth. Hatred is self consuming and never a better way to live. |

See, this is what happens to a country where Disney and Sonny Bono don't bother to come in and help us rewrite all our copyright laws. We still have that nasty Death + 50 years thing happening here.
Actually, our IP laws used to be even slacker - consumers used to have to pay a tax on blank CDs and iPods, which was used to create a fund to compensate artists whose work may have been downloaded. The big "whoops!" came when the government first tried to take someone to court for file sharing and the ruling was "um, you can't charge them a tax for file sharing, and then prosecute them for file sharing." |

If I'm not mistaken, the so-called "iPod tax" was never actually passed. The Canadian copyright laws were last amended in 1998 and, while three bills have been presented to the House, they have all died on the order paper because elections were called.
The blank CD tax was put in, but the blank DVD version wasn't actually passed. I have no idea how this tax is actually collected since the price of blank CDs in bulk would appear to be similar to the tax rate, leaving $0 for the manufacturer, distributor or retailer ... an unlikely scenario. This can be contrasted with the photocopier tax where a few cents (or whatever) is collected and used to reimburse authors (as a category, not as individuals). But obviously this is impossible to implement in the general market so it is actually only libraries that honour and pay it, as far as I know. I continue to believe that the best copyright solution is actually less: that protecting a creation for a period of time (like patented vs generic drugs) is a tangible social good and, likewise, ending the protection while the creation still has value is a tangible social good. You can argue about the specifics (for drugs the time period is 20 years), but in my view 50 years after the death of the creator is harmful and clearly does nothing to benefit the long dead creator whom we are allegedly trying to protect. |

This makes me happy. We still have a touch of sanity in our IP laws. Probably not for much longer now that the conservative government just got a majority. We'll likely be importing the DMCA as is.

Don't hold out much hope. Both parties are pressured to, and do, support DRM.
The only hope is to not feed the monster. |
