Since the thread sort of devolved into charity discussion, I'd like to encourage Americans who are donating toward Japanese relief to also consider donating to local worthy charities. I've got nothing against helping the Japanese people but there are so many worthy causes and desperate people who are a lot closer to home.
Don't get me started on folks who donate to animal causes but never to 'people' causes... |

Ectaco, the makers of the jetBook ereaders, is offering free Japanese translation
software, to those engaged in the relief effort. I've been retired for ~ 19yrs and just received a letter from the Army Emergency Relief Fund (AER). This may be only the second time they have contacted me since I retired. Luck; Ken |

From The New York Times:
Stress Test for the Global Supply Chain Modern global supply chains are like the human body: remarkably resilient, but also vulnerable at some points. The crises in Japan expose some of those weaknesses. http://nyti.ms/fugkNz |

I just received an email from the charity where I support two foster children, on in Africa and one in the Dominican, asking for donations for children in Japan. I feel for the Japanese people and especially the children, but I am not going to donate money to one of if not the richest country in the world. I was in Hawaii last year and saw hundreds and hundreds of Japanese teenagers running around with daddies platinum card buying up everything that wasn't nailed down. Japanese billionaires are more than capable of looking after the Japanese poor. I'll stick to the real destitute in Africa and the like.

Thought-provoking thread.
It's not very helpful to simply refuse to play as soon as your views are challenged, even if some forum members do use somewhat 'vigorous' language when debating issues. Makes a change to see a forum where some political discussion is allowed by the mods. |

It's also a place where topics that devolve into that sort of argument get shunted, Because the rest of the MobileRead participants probably aren't interested in being forced to watch the hard code debaters go at it hammer and tongs. Some political discussion is inevitable in a topic like this. As long as it stays civil and retains elementary courtesy and respect for holders of dissenting opinions, it doesn't get banished to the P&R forum. ______ Dennis |
