Why the iPad thread? You could have made the same call in ANY thread. Step into a kindle thread. Hey you guys, why not give up buying a kindle and send the money to Japan.

Hey, droid fan, why not forgo getting your droid toy and give the money to Japan instead.

Maudlin and absurd. A new thread in the general forum with links to places to give to support the needs in Japan would have been very appropriate. What you did -- is both maudlin and absurd.

For those who haven't heard of it: Maudlin 1. tearfully or weakly emotional; foolishly sentimental

Just because I disagree with your sentiment is no indication that your opinion is less deserving of being aired as mine. Frankly, had someone not felt the need to chastize me for expressing my sentiment, the issue would have died.

And calling someone's post "maudlin and absurd," isn't personal... Still, you got rid of that rubbish...

I never said it wasn't personal. If you believe in an idea and someone disagree's with your idea -- it can certainly feel personal.

It's personal to step on people's joy in getting a new toy -- only to be looked at with "gee, how sad that you chose to buy an <insert any of the gadgets we talk about on this forum here> instead of helping the poor of Japan. Have you no heart?"

That is absolutely not what I said. Let's agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Right now the best way we can help is to give directly to the Japanese Red Cross. My wife and I gave at the weekend.

Good idea. I'm going to see if they have an online donation button.

EDIT: I went with Amer Red Cross. They are set up to funnel the cash directly also.

I set up monthly donations to charities, and related orgaisations. I never give additional donations to anything, and I never feel guilty about that fact.

If someone can afford to donate to a cause, and feels that they should donate to that cause, that's fine too.

Whether or not a particular device will have availability impacted by supply chain problems caused by ripple effects of the disaster in Japan will depend on the device and where the components are sourced from. Everything isn't made in Japan, and many things that are are manufactured in fabs in areas unaffected by the quake and tsunami. For that matter, preliminary reports indicate most fabs suffered no physical damage, and are offline due to no electric power. Production will resume when they have it.

Those interested in tracking the production issues might look here:
http://www.eetimes.com/electronics-n...ke-of-disaster

Meanwhile, that fact that it's appropriate for other devices besides Apple's doesn't make it inappropriate here.
