Oh!

I didn't know the Kindle could do that!

See, one of my goals is to seriously reduce the paper I use. I have a bookkeeping services business and I am really trying to get clients to be paperless as possible and I sort of need to practice what I preach. The ever rising cost of printer ink is pretty good incentive though.

I've really been trying to stop purchasing paper books. One of the special challenges about that though is my reference books.

Hmm.... More to think about.

The Kindle and Sony's are the easiest to take notes on, highlight, and use the dictionary. With the Sony you use the touchscreen. With the Kindle you use the four way directional pad. I really like the ability to look up my notes on the computer. That only works for books bought from Amazon though.

So....

I know Kindle has the built in keyboard. How does annotating work on the touch screens? Is there a virtual keyboard or it is possible to use a stylus?

I also just spied the Opus and Orizon by Bookeen. Of course the Kindle is cheaper.

I'm not sold on the Sony touch models. When they first came out the screens I saw in the stores got marked up pretty quick.

I have not used the touchscreens on the SOnys so I have no idea how it works. I would imagine it would be a touch keyboard. I know you can use a stylus or your fingers.

Keep in mind that the readers at stores are handled by a ton of people and probably are not cleaned regularly by the staff.

That said, I don't like touchscreens because of the finger prints on them. I am sure that there are a lot fewer on a personal reader and you can clean it when you want. I have a feeling that the finger prints would not be an issue.

When I was buying an e-reader I had a choice of the Sony and the Kindle, there were other choices but those were the two I knew of. I preferred the Kindle because Sony's bookstore was awful, keep in mind there was no BN or Kobo, and I really liked the 3G connectivity of the Kindle.

Based on how I have used my e-reader, I would make the same choice today. I love the 3G connectivity and the ability to download books without having to connect to a computer. I don't use the library so that is not an issue for me. I am not a huge fan of touchscreens so that is not a selling point for me. I like collections on my Kindle for organization. And the Most expensive Kindle is less expensive then its equivalent Sony model.

One isn't required to use the touchscreen feature! There are page turn buttons, and the unit comes with a stylus! Sonys have virtual keyboards, for things like naming collections,

You would use the virtual keyboard for taking notes and the like, correct?

And I did mention the stylus in my post.

Marion,

With the exception of the wi-fi issue, the Nook Color is wonderful. I have a few PDF books of spinning and knitting patterns and it is wonderful. I like the fact that I can expand the page to zoom in to parts of the pattern.

My main need in a color e-reader was the ability to see charts and graphs and zoom in to them. I am a spinner/weaver/knitter/dye artist. I really like the crispness of the pictures.

I also use it for library books, but our local library doesn't have a huge selection for e-books. I also use it in the car in bright sunlight and at night with no problems...

My experience with the Nook Color has been good. I also use a Kindle 2 for times where I need a long battery life or times where my eyes are sensitive and I need something that is not backlit.

Yes, the virtual keyboard, although there is the possibility of handwritten notes as well.

Sorry, I was emphasizing the stylus for those who are concerned about smudging their screens unduly in general, not your post specifically.
