I'm reading "The Ghost and the Dead Deb" by Alice Kimberly. Ghosts and books, what's not to like?

Finished "My Life in France" by Julia Child - very interesting - and now I have to get back to "Howards End", so I can finish it. Not that I don't like it, it just haven't had a lot of pull.

I imagine that's a very interesting book. She led an extremely fascinating and exciting life before becoming world-renown for her cooking skills. Those who only know of her from her cooking shows know only the tip of the iceberg!

I'd definitely recommend it. It's very entertaining. It's funny though, if it wasn't for that film last year (Julie & Julia) I wouldn't have known who she were Now I've ordered "Mastering the art of French cooking" - it looks just like a great cookbook for me.

Finally have something to contribute again to this thread. I've been writing a lot and it's gardening time in central Texas. My arms were so sore yesterday from working in the yard (weenie that I am) that I sat down to read!!!

Really enjoyed Fatherly Love (Also available at the Amazon Kindle store). I reviewed it at Smashwords, but I'll probably post the review on Amazon as well, later today. It was a good find, pulp-fiction, nice solid read from an Australian author...B.A. Wallace.

I should be doing that too Maria, but I'd rather read. I think it's time for the "assisted living" for me.

A new reading cycle

A new reading cycle for me. It goes with the season: the ever increasing garden chores plus other curricular obligations (my wife is urging me to read Mothers Are Never Wrong by Giovanni Bollea so that I can stay in step with her efforts with the small ones in the family. It is a pbook and I will be forced to read it on the train, in competition with the paper that right after the midterm elections is full of juicy stuff).

I moved The History of Western Philosophy by Bertrand Russel to the back burner. That's one of the advantages of ereaders for us modern people. All of us - and not only the owner of a library with a full set of accessories, inclusive of manservant to light the lamps, stack the fireplace and keep the decanter at the ready - can read everywhere everything and whenever we fancy (if there is a plug). The sudden passion for Augustinus that hit me around Xmas has settled down to daily seeds more emotional-spiritual than rational-intellectual. I have used Russel for backgrounding the background of Augustine.

Reading Present Tense by Wallace has satisfied me enormously but it has left my brain buds exhausted and saturated. Now I am attracted by something softer. (I am not giving up Wallace: I might try something that can be read in steps like Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (1999) of which I have read and admired the first three, before tackling the novels).

When my mind is dulled by having read something very strong, or by real worries (which does not happen since long time, thank you dear Power Above, and let's keep it this way, please and if so pleases you), I either read science fiction or crime in a very wide sense that includes war, espionage, detectives, ..

I choose Declarations of War (1971) of Len Deighton which I read 40 years ago, and found it very nice at that time. This is re reading. Let's see if I still enjoy it. The first pages are good and I do not remember them.

I am taking a very daring step toward the unknown. I am starting a new author, with a serie (very reassuring a serie). A certain Daniel Silva. I bought his first: The Unlikely Spy (1996).

I started The Life of Pi. Recommended by my wife as bizarre, funny and captivating.

Finally I want to read for the BookClub The Egg and I by Betty MacDonald.

A little byte at the time. Maybe one of these will catch me fast enough so that I will read it all by itself without interruptions.

Just finished "The Blue Nowhere" by Jeffrey Deaver. It's an interesting thriller set in the world of hackers. It seems slightly dated by today's standards and terminology but still makes for a very interesting read.

Laid up after having surgery for kidney stones, so I purchased "The Warded Man" and "The Years of Rice of Salt to pass some time, but I haven't even looked at them yet. If you want to be sick and have time to read, kidney stones are not the answer- man alive, do they hurt.

I haven't had much sympathy from my wife, though, who gave birth to my youngest daughter naturally with no anesthetic Just kidding, she's awesome. Men can be babies when we are sick.

beppe, what are you impressions of "Life of Pi" so far? Loved it the first time I read it, and I am thinking about a reread soon.

Hi Mikemck,
I hope you are feeling better!
I have read very little of Life of Pi. So far it looks very ... Canadian. Gentle and smooth. I'll be more precise when I read more. Take care now.

I just started "Dying to Call You" by Elaine Viets in pbook, the third in her "Dead End Job" Mysteries. I haven't read the first two, but it looks like that won't matter.

Probably not more than "English", "German", "American", "Scandinavian", or "French" - but I have a very good idea what those terms signify (at least to myself)

I had kidney stones years ago and you have my full sympathies - they're agony. Thank heavens for ice-cold pain relieving suppositories! Luckily mine came out naturally, it's an interesting sensation feeling bits of rock working their way down your tubes.
Hope you're recuperating ok, and able to catch up with your reading.
