This happens, a bit differently, where I am; here, anything mammalian and under 30-50 lbs is a snack. Not really joking; we live with packs of coyotes, bobcats (not packs, there, obviously), and other predators; smaller animals like small cats, miniature dog-anythings like Chihuahuas, Pinschers, and that size are easily--and I mean, easily--snatched up by Death from Above, in the massive raptors we have here, mostly hawks during the day but some Goldens and at night, we are the winter home of Great Horned Owls, and they really are death from above.

We do, of course, though, also have dogs that get out, and get loose (homes here typically are not walled or yarded), and yes, they can be struck by the occasional passing car, which, given our utter dearth of traffic, you gotta wonder.

But the thing with living here is, if you see a pet, you immediately must rescue it. You can't assume it's "not lost," or it's "always out" or...you just can't because 99% of domestic pets outside here won't make it. We have tons of "lost" things pinned to the mailboxes and the like...it's heartbreaking, and everybody up here tries to warn the newbies, the city people who move in and throw open their doors and all their pets run outside...urghghghghg.

My sister didn't like that one, not sure why.

Today this one came on the market. The bedrooms are a good size. I love the attic and it's got a dedicated laundry room instead of having it on the attic landing. I like the garden, it could be greener, but it better than the usual fully tiled Dutch gardens. My only gripe is that the kitchen looks very sterile, but that will be easily remedied by bringing in some colour (the living room also needs more colour). My sister booked an appointment for Wednesday next week.

Isn't that one slightly above the range? They might be open to an offer, you never know, altho dang, gurl, houses seem to be moving in your neck of the woods! Very nice place.

This feels a bit more your speed? I mean, from what you've said and I've gathered. It's also a skoosh (very small skoosh) above, but it's really quite nice and the attic looks lovely: https://www.funda.nl/koop/de-meern/h...ijderslaan-34/ Just the right for you. And the bedrooms, one is smaller, yes, but two SEEM (images are deceptive) quite livable. I like the view out the windows--green, not other houses, etc. FWIW.

I like this one, I emailed it to my sister, but haven't heard back. We may have a bit of a higher budget than before; my sister's getting a raise from January, her job is willing to put that on paper for her mortgage advisor, so she might be able to get a higher mortgage. I personally am still holding on to the 450k budget, to be safe.

It looks like my sister isn't interested in Nieuwegein anymore. Granted it's got a bit of a reputation about which type of people live there. She also doesn't like how the neighbourhoods look.

Well, I've been looking, mostly, in EU50K less or so, to try to save you ladies, some dough but I saw this--right at the budget and thought, it really looks like it might suit. We'll see! And you can definitely get more in one neighborhood over another, even if it doesn't logically seem like that ought to be the case--like, they're practically abutting, but there were at least two neighborhoods that I ruled out just because you'd lose all sorts of square meters in space, just to live there. Yah, no. :-)

This morning my parents and I had a discussion about my grandfather's hot air balloon collection.

He was an avid balloonist, member of a prestigious club and several times a year helped out during ballooning fiestas. He had a whole collection of books, articles, framed pictures and other memorabilia (mostly spoons with balloon on them). When he died no one wanted the ballooning stuff, so my father took it because it would be a shame just to throw it all away.

And that was the discussion this morning. What to do with it, since my father still didn't want to throw it away. I jokingly asked if there wasn't a ballooning museum we could donate it to. And there is. It's even near where my father's billiard club is. My father called the man (it seems like a one man operation, he's got his museum in the poultry museum) and he would love to have the books (we didn't know about the other stuff then). So he's also getting the other memorabilia my parents don't want to keep (a picture and a drawing). I already have a wooden wall hanging my grandfather carved himself with a balloon and a set of balloon teaspoons.

It's nice that we can make someone happy with that stuff.

And better yet you don’t have to carry it to some storage space because your father didn’t want to get rid of it, so in some years down the line you and your sister would have to dispose of it.

About to change the bulb in the garage ceiling light socket. The ceiling is more than 10 feet tall (we live on quite a slope) and I need a pole with a bulb holder to reach it.

As part of my ongoing, self-appointed, nobody-wants-me-to-do-this duties, Auntie-wise:

https://www.funda.nl/koop/gouda/huis...nmolenlaan-65/

?? Did that one get seen? It's in Gouda, good price, decent size? I like some bits of it quite a lot and it's an end unit?

ETA: Wait, this one too, new listing: https://www.funda.nl/koop/gouda/huis...esterslag-104/ (some of the "rooms" are more like "suggestions of rooms" and I think one of the BR is missing a radiator, but it has some real possibilities and it's priced nicely too. AND it looks uber-quiet for your sis.)

The first one my sister didn't like, not sure why. The second one we did both like, until my sister saw how close it was to the highway.

Yesterday we went to IJselstein to look at a house. My sister has hired a real estate agent to help with buying a house and he was there. I liked the house, though the downstairs was dark. Partially because of the trees in front, but also because of the colours used to decorate the room (greens and greys) and some dark furniture. I loved the attic and the garden was a nice size. There was a storage unit behind the garden, great for bikes and tools. My sisters realtor didn't think the house would sell for much over asking price.

However, the neighbourhood is working class, with a mixture of ethnicities, very similar to the neighbourhood my sister lives in now. The house is on the edge of the section of the neighbourhood of houses build in the 1970s and apartment building (from the front you look out on those). This makes my sister hesitate. But because of the neighbourhood you get a better price.

We went into the old center of IJselstein. It's small (one street), but it's got all the basics. There's a supermarket almost around the corner.

The house in De Meern we are going to see next week is similar in size, but €50,000 more and my sister's realtor said that location usually means you have to overbid by 10%, which means it's probably out of our price range. But she still has to talk to her mortgage person, so we'll have to wait and see.
