I was doing so good this year. Plan was to not buy books, or at least very few, and read all the stuff I bought in 2013-2008 first. But noooo, I come here and keep adding stuff to wishlists, to maybe lists and of course I buy.
![]() Oh, and thanks Blossom, thanks a lot for getting me hooked on "Haven". ![]() I have been plowing through the seasons the last week. I started the last season (4). I thought I would just watch one or two episodes to see what the fuss was. 3 seasons later, here I am. Reading has suffered. Now why can't buying the books suffer. ![]() I have added a lot of stuff to wishlists just from the last few pages here. This thread should come with a warning. ![]() |

I can truly say I am not a TV watcher but It was like crack I had to watch them all and I thought it about it night and day for a week after I finished it. I can't remember the last show that got me like that. ![]() How come no author has written anything like this? Small town paranormal mystery series. It would be awesome! ![]() |

It would be nice to have the warning in the thread title, but alas, I think it's long enough as it is!
When looking for books by my current obsession Sarah MacLean on OD I came across a couple of books by Stella MacLean and am currently reading Baby in Her Arms. It's about a widow who comes across letters from her deceased hubby who writes a poignant picture of the years of their relationship, helping her to move on, and form a relationship with the next door neighbor. Trouble is, it's in first person, which I'm not a big fan of, and also, I don't remember reading any other first person Harlequins (it's a SuperRomance). |

And not just the typical vampires, witches and weres. I think that is why I like this so much. It really is like crack. I watch only specific shows. Most of whats out there doesn't interest me. I do like Sleepy Hollow right now and Grimm and I liked Fringe. Many other shows I liked were cancelled way too soon. I did read that so far there is not decision on a 5th season. I still have about 9 episodes to go. Wouldn't be the first series though were I was left hanging at the end. I never even heard about this series and I don't usually watch the stuff from the sy fy channel. Its usually not very good. This one though is fantastic. The writing, the characters, the dry wit, especially in the earlier seasons. I do like the "In Death" series and it fills kind of that void for me. Not the paranormal, but since is kind of sci fi-ish, which I also like. But not too removed from our reality. I really would like more paranormal romancey stuff that is not vampires, witches and weres. Hard to find though. |

![]() The unique thing about Haven is 1. It's a small town where everything takes place 2. There is always a explanation of why something is happening. There are no vampires, weres or other mythological creatures. I can't say more without giving away spoilers but that was sheer genius. 3. These special happenings are always a negative thing nothing positive about them. 4. Everything and everyone is connected in someway to the town and that symbol. Will we ever know why? *sigh* |

![]() BTW, talking about TV series, I just went through all 6 seasons of Sons of Anarchy and I just LOVED it. Brilliant [though violent] writing, storyline, everything. I describe it as Sopranos/Justified but with bikers, and even way better storyline. And to keep this romance book related, Charlie Hunnam was supposed to be Christian Gray from FSOG. Anyways, meet Jax from SOA, just a little something to brighten your day! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

One of the more unusual of the paranormal/UFs I've read lately-- Darynda Jones' Charley Davidson series. (Fantastic Fiction link) This one has ghosts, angels, demons, & the Grim Reaper, but the love interest plays out over multiple books, so not true paranormal romance. And let's just say bad boys don't get any badder than Reyes...his story makes some of the Black Dagger Brotherhood look like Boy Scouts. ![]() It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea (dark with twisted humor; read reviews & check out samples), but it's definitely different from many I've read in the last few years. I'm on the fourth book, and I've enjoyed it so far. |

I wouldn't care if the series was Urban Fantasy or had any romance in it. I would love to find something like Haven to read. ![]() |

I can totally see why. I expect it's one of those people will either love or hate, with little in between. But at least it isn't the same old-same old.
(Darn it, I keep thinking of possibilities, and every time, I realize they have either vamps or weres--even if they're not the "traditional" sort. How very annoying!) |

Hmm, Chaz McGee started a "Dead Detective" series...but I can't remember enough about it to say whether it would fit your criteria. Two were mainstream published as Chaz McGee, and I think there were three more self-pubbed when the publisher dropped her, but she released them under a different name. I'm at work, so I'll have to look up what name it was when I get home and can check my book list.
ETA: FYI - this is not a romance series. But it's paranormal without vampires, zombies, or werewolves. There's also the Casey Daniels series, although the tone for that is more like Stephanie Plum. Cemetery tour guide hits her head on a tombstone and starts seeing the ghosts of people buried there - and of course they all want her to solve their deaths.
