[Just a side note on the haboob question: There was a MAJOR controversy in Phoenix when the term was used on TV & radio! Outraged viewers complained that it sounded too much like "boob" (shades of Beavis & Butthead), or that American TV should not use an Arabic/Islamic term for an American meteorological condition. Go figure!]

A specific event? I recall hearing of a means to measure time accurately by measuring the position of the moons of jupiter. It was computationally quite complicated and required a telescope and clear weather but, as I recall, it was the odds-on favorite to win the longitude prize, was it not? Is that the "event" that was to measured? Wait, you said latitude. Never mind. Or are these related?
