Once in Austin I learned how to become invisible.
That generous man of my brother in law took us to a barbecue place the other side of the railroad, just in front of a crack house. Middle of the night. You eat your meat, quite good by the way, on a table in the porch, helping yourself with old newspapers. A neat place. No beer. So I crossed the street to the gas station. A low car is there with huge shadows inside. An old man walks away with his paper bag. One of the shadows gets out of the car, picks up the old man by the back of the neck, lifts him up and swing him gently untill coins come out, no words. He lets him down and shuffle away with his paper bag.
I became invisible, got my six pack, payed and went back to finish the meat drink my beer, smoke a few and tell the story.

Once found a paper bag filled with 3-4 dead kittens on the sidewalk near where I lived in San Antonio. I was 17 and on my way to a gas station that sold tobacco to minors.

Some freaky evil shit out there imo.

That's true. So true. Nevertheless in my shoes what I saw of Texas has always looked a swell place to me.

The pleonastic though, it could be one of the new greenies. The one with the funny hat.

This is the first karma cookie that I like and that I find it fits me. Spoiler: The first first-hand hint I had of Texas and Texans was back in 75. I was in Mexico City on top of one of those pyramids, amidst a bunch of tourists, mostly Germans and French. Reflexes, running shoes, fancy post-hippy clotheries. A guy stood out from the inane crowd. Lanky, with hawk eyes, discolored shirt hanging loosely on a parsimonious frame. An old fashioned camera (an old Leica on close inspection) in a leather case with those narrow leather straps. A pale blue graysh shirt, not one of those greenish one that Her Majesty subjects carry when on the road, I suspect for delayed washing tactics. Something inside me said. Texan. And years later, in Austin, I recognized that style as vintage. Everybody is ready to take any job to live in the merry town of San Francisco, so kind and sweet. But Austin. What a place. More on Texas and Texans when I feel like.
