Well, at least I can console myself by remembering that just about anything I'm buying at Amazon these days is technically a freebie. Even those two hardback graphic novels that I just dropped about $65 of Viggle/Visa/Perk-generated credit on.

Hi there, I'm June and I am an ebook buying addict. 578 books tagged TBR. And today I found a memory stick with 127 more books, from 2009.... And since I have Kindle Unlimited, I "have to" read at least 4-5 books from there a month, plus I end up buying other interesting books. So no time to read from TBR... I am definitely set for life if I end up on a deserted island with an ereader and solar charger....

I have 52 Larry Niven books in TBR, fortunately maybe half are short stories. Challenging myself to read all of those this year. And only buy 2-3 new books a month.... So far not doing too good with restricting buying, have bought 13 so far this month.....and only read 6, I think

Hi June, welcome to the thread.

I think my first bit of unsolicited advice would be to cancel Kindle Unlimited. You can always sign up again later. That way you won't feel forced to read 4-5 books from there each month, and can read books from your TBR pile, which are presumably books that you actually chose to buy, rather than just ones that look vaguely interesting and are on Kindle Unlimited.

My TBR is currently 823, up 35 on the start of the year. I hope to reduce it below 750 by the end of the year.

And here I wasn't expecting June for another couple of months...

More seriously, welcome to the thread. There are frequently good tips here.

Thanks for the welcomes and advice

I should cancel Kindle Unlimited.... but.... it's such a good deal. And what if they stop offering it to new subscribers.... Silly me, I know....

Ah - there's one thing you must learn to have any chance of reducing your TBR. A good deal on a book that you don't really want is a bad deal.

How many of your Kindle Unlimited reads would you have bought and read if they weren't on Kindle Unlimited? Were they really good uses of your reading time? Are there books on your TBR that you think you would have enjoyed more?

Of course, it's possible that your answers are "All of them. Yes. No.", in which case - ignore your TBR and keep on with Kindle Unlimited!

It is, of course, much easier to give advice than to take it oneself.

Especially when one is an addict.

I cancel my KU account and restart for a month or two periodically. My sisters both access my account so between us, go through about 20 books during that month. Just remember to write a reminder on your calendar to cancel the day or two before. I missed the cutoff this month. It really helped that I was able to create separate KU wishlists. I'm currently at the time of the year where I can barely read an hour or so (allergies), so another reason why a year round KU account doesn't work for me.

Sadly, I must report that while I'm doing well on resistance to ebooks and audiobooks, I bought another gadget about 2.5 minutes after I saw it advertised. It was an Amazon Echo Dot. I already have an echo....

[edited to add] Amazon has fixed it. You can cancel any time during the month, but your access won't stop until the last day that you paid for. yay Amazon!

June, consider having a Larry Niven month. The whole month, just devote yourself to the Larry Niven short stories. Or even half a month. I'm devoting April to just reading my magazines since I am so darn behind on them. I have to decide in June whether to renew, so it's best I get started before then.

It's a good thing I don't count audiobooks, as I've bought five this month, three of them in the past two days. I hadn't thought of audiobooks as being an issue for me, but clearly this situation needs to be monitored closely.

I'll offset that with the much better news that after averaging one pbook every two weeks last year, I've bought only one this year to date. My goal was to buy none in the first half, but at least I got right back on the wagon.

Did I hear you say this is an ebook thread? I've gotten a tad complacent about those, but must admit that at best I'm barely keeping abreast of the accumulation, even though my numbers are way down from the years of indulgence. I'll do a monthly and quarterly wrap-up at month's end.

I'm doing fab so far this year. Just three books purchased totaling $2.06.

Now my free ebook pile is growing shockingly. I had to create a separate Calibre library for those puppies.

I'm with issybird -- I don't count audio books. Good thing, or my numbers would be worse. Though I do track them on my yearly challenge. I just don't count them as a problem. In some ways, they're more self limiting, and I manage to not too often succumb to Audibles "buy 3 credits" offers. I just wait patiently (or not so patiently sometimes.)

My recent purchases were mostly of the "get the deal while you can" variety. A daily deal and some where I had to get the audiobook while I had the Kindle book from OverDrive in order to get the Whispersync price. Audiobooks are so expensive that it would be nuts not to take advantage of an exploding deal.

A cheap Whispersync indulgence is the early P.G. Wodehouse books, where if you're in the US you can get the Kindle book for free and the matching audiobook for $2.99. I get them as I need them and how sorry I'll be once I hit 1923!

This is the enablers' thread, isn't it?
