I've been checking the BB site and they list inventory online. Hopefully the system is accurate; nearly all the BBs in my region list the Oasis as in-store.
I'm really surprised by the in-store return for credit rather than cash. I'm going to a BB tomorrow and will ask about it. |

Bummer, that's too bad. The dictionary font size is not only too small but also very faint. Too be fair, my Nook ST has the same issue.

I've always thought that any font adjustments you make to the book you're reading should be applied automatically to the dictionary, too. It's annoying at night, when I increase the font size and boldness so I can read comfortably with the screen light down low, to find that I can no longer see the dictionary text clearly as a result.

I got my Oasis on Tuesday - the thinner side was very, very noticeably more yellow than the thicker side - a good inch and a half of a dirty yellow, plus it had a pinprick light that caught my eye.
The replacement arrived today and fortunately no pinprick and while the thinner side still darkens and yellows out, it's doesn't darken as much and it's an inch rather than an inch and half. I can't decide if it's too distracting yet or not. At the same time, I impulse bought a new paperwhite because my previous Voyage self-destructed (screen stopped registering my fingerprint) back in Sept and returning it gave me a 50+ paperwhite credit plus the trade in amount. And the paperwhite and new Oasis both arrived today and I almost prefer the paperwhite. (I hate the screen texture and the bulkiness in comparison, but I'm wondering if the Oasis's larger screen size is also making it a little more tiring to read on my eyes, or if it's just the screen unevenness doin,lg it. Interestingly, my first reaction to the paperwhite was 'holy cow, that screen is YELLOW, it must be defective, I won't be able to read on that' - compared to my old very blue/white paperwhite. But it's also VERY even with no blotching at all and in practice the yellow feels very easy on my eyes" So here I am, two brand new Kindles and I'm trying to read a little on each to decide how to get the best out of both! There are worse problems to have. (I wish I knew if I just got only slightly less unlucky with my second Oasis and still got a worst-than-most screen and a third try might get something more even still. Normally I wouldn't have said I'm super sensitive to kindle screen shading differences, only the pinprick lights.) |

Thank you to everyone about Best Buy. I went to my local one tonight and picked up a 8gb WiFi model to check out the screen. My 32gb 3g model has really noticeable shading and more yellow screen on the opposite side of the buttons. I’m sad to say that the 8gb model has some of the same problem. However, it isn’t near as bad and it’s less distracting. I’m thinking I’ll get used to it and going to keep the 8gb. I didn’t find any other issues with it. Bummer since I’d rather have the 3g connectivity but can’t live with that screen.

For those who have both a new Oasis2 and a Voyage, how does the Oasis2 feel weight-wise compared to the Voyage while reading lying on your back, holding the Kindle above you?
I know the Oasis2 is slightly heavier than the Voyage. But is the Oasis2's ergonomics enough to make it feel the same or even lighter than Voyage while reading lying on your back, holding the Kindle above you. |

Got my new oasis yesterday, gutted I can still light cones down the side with the buttons. Can only see when I really look, nowhere near as bad as my original oasis which despite swapping twice I have spent the last year trying to tell myself they're not there and it doesn't bother me... Undecided now whether to return and hope the next one is better or just get a refund and wait for next years model.

You sound as if you're actively looking for problems. Why do that? Why "really look", I mean? If the screen in OK in normal use, that's what matters, isn't it?

My 32gb wifi screen lighting is really even. If I didn't know the lights were on the button side, I'd be hard pressed to tell where the light was coming from. Admittedly I'm really not sensitive or picky about this, and I seldom use the light at all. (Glad it turns all the way off.)
After 4 days, I'm still finding the form factor awkward. Especially when reading in bed. |

I went to the Amazon book store near me and was really impressed with the screen of the new Oasis. So much brighter and sharper than my PW1. But I won't be buying it, and price is only one reason.
I need a bigger screen. And the best trick I know to get maximum screen size it to read in landscape mode. This just didn't feel very convenient on the Oasis with the tiny bezels (outside of the grip area to one side). Sure, for pics or funnybooks, overall screen area might be the most important stat. But for me, I just don't want to read skinny little magazine column sized lines (especially since I cannot use the tiny fonts), so the most important dimension is width. And my current PW1 is wider in landscape than the Oasis is in portrait, and I think I'd be stuck with portrait on the Oasis because of the bezels. I suspect I am not the usual case. But I sincerely don't understand why everyone clamors for bigger screens but then reads in portrait mode. If I had an ebook blog, my first post would be: "The Trick that expands any eink screen by 33%." Heck, I gather Kobo doesn't even have a setting to rotate to landscape. So for now, I'll stick to my old PW1 and tablets. And if the PW1 dies, I'd probably upgrade to a new PW, or possibly roll the dice on a bigger 8 inch chinese eink tablet. Hats off to Amazon anyhow. The Oasis is a good looking machine, and it seems like my insistence on maximizing width is likely a personal eccentricity. |
