Just got around to installing 5.6.5 on my Voyage. Wow, to use an American saying, Bookerly really blows chunks! That is, it sucks really, really bad on my Voyage. I was hoping for something much better. Comparing it to both Caecilia and Caecilia Condensed, both of which are fairly dark on the screen, Bookerly seems thin, faded, light grey, and just becomes too difficult to see on my Voyage's somewhat murky screen. Bookerly works okay on my iPhone and iPad where it is as dark as Caecilia, but on my Voyage it is too thin and light to be usable. It would cause too much eyestrain. I'm sticking with Caecilia Condensed.

ETA: I like and use Bookerly on my iThingies. But Amazon shanked it for the Voyage. Major fail!

I wasn't overly font of the Bookerly font on my Voyage at first, but I've used it for the last week and it's grown on me. I quite like it now, although I do agree that it would be improved by being a little darker.

HarryT I feel the same way. I do use it most of the time. But it would be improved by being a little darker.

I do really like the style and look of Bookerly, but it is way too light for my Voyage's screen. I would have major eyestrain. I like Caecilia Condensed better though as it fits more words per line and does a better job of being readable. Unfortunately Caecilia Condensed is not available on the iThingies and since Bookerly is as dark as Caecilia on them, I prefer it on them. At least 90% of my reading is done using my iThingies.

You would have major eyestrain based on a magic crystal ball? Putting more words on a line isn't the only criteria. Nor is not being black the only reason for eyestrain. The only way you could tell if it is true is to read with Bookerly until you get eyestrain. Shouldn't take that long, right?

I'm not sure why people here insist on questioning a person's vision or visual preferences. Read me lips, "The Bookerly font is too effing light for my eyes to read it comfortably on the Voyage. PERIOD." End of subject, regardless of whether you agree or not. My eyesight, my call.

I gave Bookerly a try on my PW2. Beside being a tad too light for me, it is basically a tweaked Caecilia, which I never cared for. To me, it's readable and inoffensive without being pleasing.

Baskerville and Palatino are /really/ not good for long reading on the kindle. And Helvetica is sans. So Bookerly basically wins by default.

Hi,
My kindle paperwhite 2013 software version is 5.6.1.0.6 and i add my own font to the device. this font is a Persian language font that is right to left language. now my question is: if i update my kindle software, can i read my persian books in this version?
I'm afraid that i can't see my books correctly in this version. if you have this update, please try demo version of this book below (That is persian) and post a screen capture for me.
Thanks!

I am afraid it doesn't look right. The left side looks straight when the right side should? No matter what font is chosen, it always looks the same except spacing between lines. So there is a default fallback font. That is on my Voyage - what got me confused for a bit - the forward and back buttons work as expected, but swiping is backwards to left to right language. Swipe left to right to forward, right to left for back.

I fully agree with you. I really like Bookerly font, especially for reading outside. But it is a little too light for reading under artificial light, at least for me. So I modified it to make it a little bolder and used Calibre to embed it in books. It's not ideal I know, but for my eyes it is perfect: original Bookerly font for reading outside and modified for reading inside using "Publisher Font" feature.

The Swiping direction is correct because it's a right to left language. the words and characters ,also, shown very good!

I just don't see how Amazon could have botched Bookerly by making a lightweight. A lot of people won't like it because of this. Amazon could easily do another firmware update that adds weight to Bookerly.

You are welcome. Yes, of course the swiping action is correct. It just had me confused for a second - usually don't read books from the other end.

Haha, I must say I do have a love for the written word, and with reference to this forum, 'erudite' is my new favourite

After reading interchangeably on my tablet and Voyage, during the day its far more convenient to carry a device around with me, all day, in my hand, that makes phone calls, has all my documents, info, contacts, etc. and most importantly, has ALL my books on it. However, at night time, when all is quiet, my Voyage wins hands down. I wish I could carry around my Voyage all day with me but its just not feasible.

Now I dunno if its the magic of a Bronte but I'm reading Jane Eyre with the new typesetting on my Voyage and it does seem to be flowing much nicer. I retract all my original transgressions with the new engine: the characters are indeed placed better, take up much less space, and takes you on a ride that is much less 'bumpy'. Hoping they work out how to apply the new engine to sideloaded epubs too! (Inb4 someone yells at me for complaining again lol :rolleyes)
