The basics: adding new font choices to the Aa menu. It's as simple as dropping your font files (no need to rename the files) in the linkfonts/fonts folder at the root of your Kindle. This is what confused me.

So basically, i think i got this, we can only change 3 fonts, right ? Cause in the first page it says we can have 15 custom fonts, now it says we can only override 3.

Read the section appropriate for your FW version carefully.
(Granted, I thought I'd rewritten most of that, but apparently not, so, yeah, do read everything until the end, and only remember what actually applies to your FW ;p). |

You can't override all built-in fonts in Aa menu (at least not by simply using KUAL buttons in Font Override subsection, you could [but probably shouldn't do all of them] do it manually creating config files) but nothing is stopping you from adding 10 custom font to linkfonts/fonts folder, do "update fontconfig cache" and periodically (when you get bored of your current custom font) change the override for "condensed" to some other already added font and then just do "Restart the KF8 reader now" to apply the change and continue reading your book(s) using that new font. |

Does the fonts hack still work as expected on the just-released 5.7.3 FW?

2 Font types for two simultaneous custom fonts to be shown in Aa menu
Hello.
I am on 5.6.5 PW2 model and i was interested in knowing which two font types can be played with for getting two custom fonts displayed simultaneously in Aa menu. Currently, I am just using condensed font type for my needs. But now there are two fonts, I really like and i want it to be shown in Aa menu simultaneously. At present, I have to do framework restart for every change in font, I do. Plus, I read some font types if changed can mess up your menu types and setting fonts, which are Irrecoverable using font hack kual extension, have i read it correct? Anyways please let me know which two font type can i play with, besides condensed, without messing my kindle or the settings font. Thanks!!! |

@mitra: Moved to the right thread
![]() Serif's a good choice, if you don't care much for Caecilia. Barring that, Palatino or Baskerville, but you'll have to do it manually (something which has been done a few posts ago ![]() Or, if you update to >= 5.7.2, Sans is now safe, too (w/ the current snapshots). |

@NiLuJe: Thanks for moving the post to appropriate thread.
I checked in Serif font type and **Show current** there shows Bookerly. I dont mind changing Caecilia but Bookerly, I like it and want to keep it. I was wondering if me changing Serif font type in 5.6.5 would replace Bookerly mistakenly which i donot want. Plus, I dont have bookerly font .ttf file, If i wish to correct my mistake. Wanted to double check if Caecilia will only get replaced here on 5.6.5 or bookerly might take a toll, If I replace Serif font type? I appreciate your inputs and timely responses greatly. Thanks NiLuJe. |

@mitra: Good point, yes, Serif will replace Bookerly in that case.
The good news is it should then be trivial to replace Caecilia with something else. There's an example config that switches Caecilia for Bookerly, for instance. (Do you already see both Bookerly and Caecilia in the Aa menu on 5.6.5? Can't remember, but that's the case on >= 5.7). I must have done it that way for a reason, because right now that seems like a weird workaround instead of simply just overriding Caecilia from the get go, but, hey... ![]() Note that on >= 5.7.2, you also get an extra font in the Aa menu (Open Dyslexic), which makes another perfect candidate for replacement ![]() Last edited by NiLuJe; 04-04-2016 at 12:00 PM. |

Yes, I see both fonts Caecilia and Bookerly on 5.6.5.
Like you said, I could manually change Baskerville to my custom font, so i treaded backwards and found few post suggesting ways how i could do that. I stumbled upon these steps, correct me if i understand it incorrectly. 1. It says editing fc-override.tpl in linkfonts/etc directory. There is one more file fc-override-serif.tpl. which one of the two should i modify for Baskerville? 2. Since, I am on windows, i am suggested using notepad++ for editing files. 3. Once I open the file, I have to replace "%TO_OVERRIDE%" to "Baskerville" and also "%TO_USE%" to "Clear Sans" in linkfonts/fonts ". One thing i find missing here is it doesnot mention creating any file in conf.d directory, am I the only one to find it missing or should i go ahead and change Baskerville font without worrying about conf.d directory changes? @knc1: True
![]() @mitra: The idea is to use fc-override.tpl as a template (eh!), to create a *new* config file in the conf.d folder (roughly following the same naming pattern as the rest, most likely something like 99-baskerville.conf). But, yeah, that's it ![]() |
