I'm also waiting for 1 and a half years for a decent big screen ereader for academic purpose to appear on the market. All of them come from small companies and have very buggy and limited firmware at the beginning, I hope the market will be more mature. I have an iRex DR800 and it's close for what I need (if I read in landscape mode and with hacked firmware), although I realized I read more fiction than articles.

Very frustrated after a weekend of attempting to use the M90 in the outdoors. Under an umbrella on the beach, the IR mouse actuates off of heat point sources a long distance away. Page turns every 2 seconds. Very disturbing. The IR mouse also interrupts the OS, preventing other controls from being pressed. Gotta do something about this!

It works fine indoors, but we have a beach house and I want to read my cases on the friggin' beach!

OK - covering the IR sensor with six layers of tinted painters' tape has stopped the spate of IR mouse OS interrupts gackking performance, and has made the thing positively useable in the sunlight. But this is not a long term solution. Given the working characteristics of the IR mouse, is it possible to correct the behavior of that control input at all?

Hmmm. Also, how good is the handwriting recognition on the M90 - it's been having a terrible time with mine (and I never learned to scribble on a palm pilot..)

Would you mind trying whether covering it with aluminum foil (kitchen foil), plus maybe one layer of tape has the same effect? I am interested.

Probably would. Aluminum foil has a permittivity thirty times more attenuated than paper. But I didn't have any. Worked fine, with the stylus.

Other notes:
PDF annotations are exportable!

WIFI - The device cannot connect to networks with non-broadcast SSIDs.

I am a bit worried about the IR button performance. I think it would be a good option to be able to turn it off entirely.

I finally got my reader, the customs here in Sweden had taken care of my package and now I have to pay an opening fee, postage fee from customs to the delivery address and probably Swedish tax as well. I still think I made a good deal ordering it from the states though.

Unfortunately it is not being sent to where I am right now, it is sent to my stepmother. :|
I guess I have to wait until the weekend to start playing with it.

Onyx Europe has posted on Facebook: "We just noticed that we didn't clearly state that .. the IR problem is SOLVED!"

Any details on that?

I've seen that message but still people are having problems and reporting then here, in this forum. I am not complaining yet. I am still waiting to get the device in my hands and will upgrade the firmware the first thing I do.

Hi davidjoseph1

Can you describe the process for exporting the annotations?
How about highlights? Are they exportable too?
Are they exportable by exporting the PDF itself or by extracting them from some mysql database hidden in the ereader (as for Nook Touch or Kono touch) ?

thanks

As am I. Specifically, if you make annotations on a pdf, then export, is the resulting file a new, marked-up pdf? Or is it a graphic of some kind? (jpg? tiff?)

I know some of the other pdf-annotating devices have the unfortunate side effect of creating an exported pdf that loses the ability to treat the text as text (that is, the result is one big "graphic", but the file is itself a pdf). It would also be nice to know not just if the resulting file is a pdf, but whether the text can still be searched.

(I can live with losing that ability, but I know for others that has been a major concern.)

Also, (and forgive me if it's been asked and answered already) if you zoom in to make an annotation, when you zoom back out to a normal view, can you still see the notes you've made? (appropriately sized/scaled to the rest of the page?) This has also been a sticking point on some devices, where annotations are only available at the exact zoom level they were created at, or where annotations remained "sticky" on the screen and didn't maintain their relative position to the text of the pdf.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can check this out and report back.

Since today I've Onyx Boox M91S in my possession with firmware version Version 1.5.1. And I've immediately tested the IR sensor in direct sunlight: It seems that the IR sensor disables itself when it's in direct sunlight, so the IR sensor does not work at all in direct sunlight but if you move your device in shadow it works again. The automatically page turns seems to be solved. There is still some work for Onyx Boox to fine tune the sensor to make it usable in sunlight. I'm happy that Onyx Boox is making progress.

yes. you can zoom in , scribble on the "page" then zoom out and the scribble will appear to zoom out with the other text.

so we are clear

Annotation is highlighting and making a note about the highlight.

Scribbling/Margin writing is writing directly on the page.

Note is copying a section, exiting the document, enter the "Notes" function, starting a note, paste the copied bit into the note and then making remarks about that pasted portion and saving the note.

Scribbling is also a separate note function for writing grocery lists, journals, drawings etc. you can start a scribble , add pages as your scribble grows and go into the menu select tools and "export scribble"

Annotations and Scibbles are stored in a SQL database. you can find them when the device is plugged in to the computer.

The Annotations will be .SKETCH files located in the .onyx folder next to the thumbs.db. Margin writing is kept in this db.

if you export a scribble you will find it in the form of a PNG in the notes folder in a nested folder with the name of the scribble along with the .SKETCH

If you copy and paste into a NOTE that will be found in a folder called text editor as a txt file. this of course is easily transferred off the device for use in Word etc. It does lose some formatting like spaces though.

in order to export those items that are .sketch file you need something like SQL LITE for the db or a HEX editor like UltraEdit since they are hex files

forgot Snapshot

If you have and SD card in the device you can take a screenshot of the page you are on by pushing the middle of the volume rocker so that it pushes both + and - together. If you get the speaker icon on screen you havent got it right.

these are stored on the SD card in the "snapshot" folder which is created the first time yo take a screenshot

here is an example showing the small margin note i made near the king in this page from Alice, using zoom in, write and then zoom out

Hi Dulin

Thanks for the below explanations.
Can you be a little more clearer about highlights?

What if we highlight something but we do not attach any comments? That will result in an image file, right?

How easy is the copy and paste process? I am thinking about the following: select the text, copy the text into the memory(Ctrl-C like) highlight and paste the just copied text into the note that I assume will pop up when you highlight something....how does this work?

Thanks
PF
