I want to upgrade my PW, but have been recently disappointed in the contrast issues and light uniformity issues I have seen of the Oasis. Many of the comparison reviews (even the ones that praise the Oasis) show what looks to be an inferior screen when set side by side with the Voyage. The Oasis does seem to have a contrast that is comparable to to the current PW.
(I still have my Kindle keyboard and remember at how enchanted I felt looking at the e-ink—I loved the default font on this model). Every single Oasis I have seen seems to have a grayer tone to the fonts, which has held me at bay from an outright purchase. This makes me wonder whether Amazon has changed their quality control or have cuts costs in manufacturing while increasing the price of upgraded models. |

Unfortunately, blanket statements in any regard do not seem to apply with Kindles, as it depends on luck of the draw. Definitely a Your Mileage May Vary situation. I try to preface my comments with "my Oasis", because it really is a lottery. |

The gray fonts issue really started with the first Paperwhite. It's one of the reason I can't read on mine. Contrast is horrible. I have seen later K3s with this issue too. My K3 does not have that problem but my brother in-law's does.

As always, it seems to be a lottery. I had 2 Oases with screens that had slight color shifts and cone shadows. For me however, the biggest issue was that neither had contrast as good as that on my Voyage. I have read other posts that say the Oasis has better contrast than the Voyage so it really is YMMV and luck of the draw. I've decided that I'm lucky to have a Voyage with such a good screen and just enjoy it and forget the new tech.

I am sorry I did not mean to suggest that all Oasis's have the same screen, but thought that the inference would come from the ones I have seen, which is in my first sentence. I also do not wish to suggest that all PW's have the same screen, as these have been truly all over the contrast gamut. Every time I see a demo, the screens seem different, even when comparing models in the same font and brightness.
I want to upgrade my PW, but feel that a higher end product should not be the luck of the draw. I am wondering if the Voyage is now more consistent in quality, having been out for awhile. |

When I put my Oasis and Voyage side by side with the light set all the way to 0, the screens are the same — text is equally sharp and black. When I start to turn up the light, the text on the Oasis becomes increasingly washed out, more and more gray the higher the light setting. It's like the light layer clouds the screen. This doesn't happen with the Voyage, which stays sharp and black. |

Thank you, odamizu for sharing that. I want something that stays sharp and black with or without lighting. I was wondering if this was a new trend with the Amazon devices in terms of lighting and the washed out letters (although many have reported variances).
My dilemma is whether I spring for the current Voyage in hopes that I get the nicer contrast or wait until the Oasis goes through a few production cycles that may improve this issue with a bit more uniformity. Till, then I will continue with the current PW. Thanks to everyone for their input here. I think I found a nice online community to hang out in between reading, work and research. |

I'm just guessing here, but I think this is a design issue resulting from using 10 LEDs on the side (Oasis) rather than 6 LEDs on the bottom (Voyage). As such, I'm not expecting this will improve with production cycles, though I am hopeful it will.

For most people, it is a worthwhile trade-off in being able to read in suboptimal light. The front light also makes the background lighter, enhancing perceived contrast. However, some people just do not like the plain e-ink to front lit e-ink transition. The additional layers aren't completely transparent; they make it more like looking through a screen, as opposed to looking at a page. They also add visual artifacts, like the infamous light cones and screen splotchiness. My sister has an old basic kindle and a voyage, but she only uses the voyage when she's flying and doesn't want to turn on the overhead cabin light to read. She doesn't like something about the voyage screen, though what exactly she can't say. |

That's obviously what's causing the color gradients across their screens. The gradient goes top-down on the Voyage and left-right on the Oasis.

Thankfully my Oasis is the same sharpness as my Voyage, same contrast same black of the fonts. Up to light level 11-12 they are pretty much the same. In higher light levels, the Oasis does not look as good as the Voyage. But I never go higher than 11 on either device anyway.
My Voyage has a great screen, no cones, no color issues. I got lucky with that one. Oasis is acceptable, as it looks even at my personal light levels. My first PW was horrible on the other hand. |
