HOWEVER, on the flipping rant side: Why the holy hell are DMOADs not available for humans? Why is it that I've been able to give Adequan to my horses for 30--THIRTY!!!--years, and to dogs and cats for at least a decade, if not more--but they don't exist for humans? That's...that's absurd. Abso-freaking-lutely absurd. Given the aging of the US population (not even counting the other billions in the world), it would outsell Viagra and whatever all else sells like hotcakes--stuff for diabetes, I guess. GRUMBLE. About DMOADs: Spoiler:
THIRTY years for high-end performance horses (or, any horse, really, where the owner is willing to pay, and honestly, it's not expensive at all), and you can readily and easily learn how to administer it yourself--we administered it SubQ to the late great Miss Storm. Thirty flipping years. It just boggles me. RIP Miss Storm. /rant Hitch |

I've been needing to vent and rant about this for decades:
What wacko came up with the phrase "righty tighty, lefty loosey" as a mnemonic for turning screws? Rotation is clockwise or counterclockwise. Either way, half the thing you're turning is going left and half is going right, so what is that phrase supposed to mean?! And, worse, no one else ever seems to see this problem with the phrase. Like young Indy said: "Everyone's lost but me!" |

A vitrectomy is a procedure to do surgery on the retina, and involves removal of the vitreous in the eye. After the surgery, the eye is reinflated with a saline solution, and then a small amount of a second fluid is added to form a bubble. The patient is then required to remain face down for several weeks as that the bubble presses the retina against the back of the eye until it heals. Normally, the secondary fluid is a gas which is gradually absorbed into the blood. In extreme cases, a silicone oil is used instead. However, the oil won't absorb, and is known to have long-term neurological effects. So in most cases, they want to do a subsequent vitrectomy about a year later to remove the oil (using a gas bubble this time). I also had the 'YAG capsulotomy' procedure - it's a piece of cake compared with a vitrectomy. For those who are curious, it involves use of a YAG (Yttrium-Aluminum Garnet) laser to correct a problem with scar tissue on the pouch that contains the lens in an eye. A simple cataract is opacification of the lens, and cataract surgery is the procedure to remove that lens and replace it with an artificial implant. However, in some cases, the pouch that holds the lens can subsequently become cloudy (sometimes called a 'secondary cataract'), and in those instances, a YAG laser is use to create a small opening in the pouch to restore normal vision. This is a painless 5-minute 'drive by' procedure in which the patient is fully awake. My detachment occurred about two years after cataract surgery, and for apparently unrelated reasons. The first vitrectomy went reasonably well (other than that they didn't use enough anesthetic and I woke up in the middle of the procedure in great pain), and I had the YAG about a few weeks later. But then I had another retinal tear, and went in for a second vitrectomy. Unfortunately, the surgeon found that there was more scar tissue from the first procedure than he felt comfortable addressing, so he put the eye back together and sent me home with a referral to a surgeon at Columbia Presbyterian in NYC. I had to wait a couple of months to see the specialist who then did the third vitrectomy, this time with oil. This was a major reconstruction of the retina that took almost five hours. A year later, I went back for the 'oil change'. Unfortunately, while they were able to correct the detachment anatomically, I was left with so much scar tissue on the retina that have very little vision in that eye. Bottom line: eye surgery usually is not a big deal, but in those rare cases when things go sideways, the consequences can be really bad. Last edited by monophoto; 09-01-2022 at 09:57 AM. |

My aunt discovered that not only am I going on vacation for two weeks, but that when we sell the house I'm not moving with my parents but I'm moving in with my sister. Which means there has been a some drama these last couple of weeks. Resulting in me blocking her on my phone, social media and apps as WhatsApp.
Now, since my grandmother died she has been involved with Alzheimer Foundation, over the years her involvement has grown. She often posts on Facebook about it (almost daily). She can get a bit preachy about it (unsurprisingly), but good for her. Since I've blocked her I thought I would get a break from her. No such luck. In the latest commercial from the Alzheimer Foundation she plays a role. Probably because of her posts on Facebook the various social media now think I'm interesting in the AF, so on both Facebook and YouTube the ad is shown to me, multiple times a day. I just can't get a break from her. |

My aunt is just holier-than-thou. Apparently she thinks my only reason for existing is to care for my parents. She acts as if she was a great carer for my grandmother, but that's BS. When my grandmother lived in our area she visited once every 4-6 weeks, because it was such a long drive (45-60mins). My parents were the ones taking care of medication, groceries, laundry and were the first point of contact. Once my grandmother moved to a care home near my aunt she did visit every week. My parents also kept visiting once a week, despite the longer drive. She has a history of acting like she the Dutch Mother Theresa, whilst in reality she was not. Or maybe she is, considering the stories I read about the how Mother Theresa really was. I seem to have managed to block the ad on FB, on YouTube it's a different story. I can't seem to block it on there. |
