![]() Black licorice is our national candy; we have about a zillion different kinds and shapes. Everybody eats it; some elder folks get high blood pressure from eating too much licorice. ![]() A lot of offices here have this jar filled with licorice and dip into them. Once in a while someone buys a couple of pounds to fill it up again. When you have a cold: put some bay leaf licorice in a bottle of water: shake well and let it stand for a night = cough syrup ![]() Another idea: take a huge peppermint + some really salt licorice and put it in your mouth; tastes real good. Yes, we all love it. It's a national addiction ![]() |

I was guessing Denmark based simply on the fact that a Danish girl I worked with used to always bring salt liquorice back with her every time she went home to visit. I think it must be an acquired taste - just not one I've acquired ![]() |

![]() They never had the Salmonella problem in Japan, so raw eggs continue to be a popular food flavoring. It's the standard 'dipping sauce' for sukiyaki. Stitchawl |

In the words of that famous philosopher and statesman, "Yuck!" ![]() I too like oyakudonburi, but I prefer mine to have the egg cooked a bit. If the rice is REALLY hot, that would be enough, but rice kept warm from a rice cooker doesn't get if for me. Needs some pan time for me. Strangely enough, when used for dipping sukiyaki, I don't mind it at all. Go figure?!? Stitchawl |

For some reason, I woke up this morning with a craving for Octopus dumplings! Called 'Takoyaki' in Japan, these are a 'fast food' snack or meal depending upon the number eaten, and I just want a snack. 6 should do nicely!

I want Yaki Imo from a vendor's wagon! This is nothing like a hot baked sweet potato, roasted in a charcoal or wood oven and eaten outdoors!
Another month and the street vendors should be out in their trucks making the rounds of the neighborhoods, and the stationary vendors in all the parks! Stitchawl |

Cold, rainy Monday... Got the urge for some good Bouillabaisse! I just looked and I see that I'm all out of saffron... Damn. Gotta make a run into the city. Only one store I know has good saffron. The local markets near me only have the 'fake saffron,' looks like the 'real' stuff but comes from safflower instead of crocus, and has no flavor! For good bouillabaisse it's gotta be the real deal!

Man doth not live by tea alone. ![]() Lapsang Souchong for this afternoon's reading time, and bouillabaisse with a glass of wine for dinner. But it's still morning here, so I'm workin' on a stein of Ceylon tea as I dress for a cold rainy ride into Kyoto! Stitchawl |
