For that matter, Polydori's "The Vampire" story predated Stoker's book.

As did Varney The Vampire, but I was talking about movies based on books. The company that made Nosferatu really did face legal trouble from Mr. Stoker's widow. They changed a few details such as the name of the Vampire, but enough was recognizable to have suit brought.

I suppose one of my favorite vampire films of all-time would fit into the category of fan-fiction. It is a spin-off of a spin-off: Shadow of the Vampire (2000). It is a fictional account of the making of Nosferatu. You know how they got the vampire to look so chilling on film back in 1922? It wasn't special effects. The director hired a real vampire for the filming. The results were great, but a lot of cast members went missing.

This is true. In the original film itself, I believe the role was credited to a question mark, like the monster's role by Karloff was represented in Frankenstein. It was the studio's way of adding a bit of mystery to the film. The makers of Shadow of the Vampire played on this "mystery" element in their 2000 film by having the Nosferatu director hire a "real" vampire to play the part. Of course, the actor Max Shreck was never mentioned in Shadow of the Vampire.

However, Malkovich and Defoe both are naturally way creepier than any makeup artist can improve upon. |

Okay, I'll admit it. I used to write Harry Potter fan fiction.
In fact my first completed novel-length work was my own rendition of HP Book 6. This was years ago, in that long span of time between Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince. I really liked Rowling's writing style and I needed some practice on my writing. I also needed a community that was ready and willing to provide feedback in bunches. Fanfiction was the answer. Two years is a long time to wait for the next installment of a series you love. So I, like many other writers, filled the time by coming up with my own stories to fill the void. It was entertainment for me, and practice. I picked up where Rowling left off and inserted my own original characters, ideas, histories, and spells - all while attempting to mimic Rowling's writing style (and writing in someone else's world isn't easy). My goal was to write a book that people could actually believe was the sixth book in the series. My dream job at the time was to get a gig writing in the Star Wars expanded universe (yes, I am that huge of a geek) so I figured this would be good practice. It was quite an educational endeavor. The Harry Potter fans are rabid and at times pedantic. They were the best critics I could have had at that point in my nascent writing career. They kept me focused, and for the first time I felt the joy that comes with people enjoying stories I wrote (even if I was playing in someone else's world). Now I write my own novels, and do some freelance writing on the side. But my time as a fanfiction author definitely helped me become the writer I am today, and I think that's true of many ambitious writers in this day and age. I recall, years after I left fanfiction, that a writer on the site I used to write on got a book deal with a $500,000 advance. |

Good for you, you improved your writing skills and gave tons of rabid HP fans something to enjoy until the next book came out. That's a win/win for everyone!

My only problem with fan fiction, and one I've seen writers mention before, is its seductive nature. The feedback is immediate, and often flattering. The writing itself couldn't be easier. You have pre-made characters with well known back-stories and motivations. One writer I know of had to finally kick his fanfic habit in order to concentrate on "real" writing.

I agree that fanfic is definitely seductive, but I disagree that writing it couldn't be easier. Or, maybe I should qualify that writing it well isn't easy. Yes, the world and characters are pre-made, but not every writer is good enough to take an existing character and keep them in-character. Speaking as someone who dabbles with both fanfic and original fic (and also reads a lot of both), sometimes the fact that the world is pre-made makes it harder, because unless you're deliberately writing an alternate-universe, you have to fit your plot to a pre-existing world.

I totally agree Nahgem! There is nothing more aggravating then reading a fanfic with established characters and the writer totally writes them out of character! As soon as I see that I dump the story.
But the best stories are written by writers who not only keep them in character, but then proceed to take them in different directions that are totally believable all because they keep the characters in character. Last edited by cfrizz; 08-09-2012 at 07:59 PM. |

I personally don't see the harm of fanfiction as long as the writer is not profiting from it. I wrote some based on Star Trek when I was a very young teenager, none of it very good but it was an excellent writing exercise.
My first experience with the internet was reading fanfiction and participating in 'fan' groups on sites like LiveJournal. Most of the material I read for several years was fanfiction and there are some brilliant ones out there. |
