Sigh, I'm sending the replacement back and sticking with the first one.
Any device is going to show issues if you look at it "in a dark closet on maximum brightness". People don't read in such conditions, so who cares what it looks like in such extremes?

That's not the case for me. I mostly read in the dark with about 20-30% brightness and the defect is very noticeable. In fact, the problem goes away when it's at 100% brightness, but nobody reads like that.

Not acceptable for such a premium device.

Once I receive a replacement from Amazon, I'm going to test both devices to see if they have the same problem. If they do, and this is just how all Oasis devices are, I will be getting a refund and going back to the Voyage.

Actually, I do sometimes read in bed in the dark. We have blackout curtains so that keeps out light from outside. So yes, some people do read in such conditions.

I didn't say that people don't read in the dark. I said that people (most people, at least) don't read in the dark with their reader set to maximum brightness. Hence a defect which is only visible in such extremes is of no practical relevance.

Are we talking about the same issues? I'm looking at the pictures and seeing Oasis devices with half the LEDs not working. That's not a trivial issue, it's a major defect. I don't understand why the quibbling about it.

I am talking about the post I specifically quoted in post #316 above, in which SCION says that his/her replacement displays "a very subtle gradient when viewed at maximum brightness in a dark closet". That does not sound like "a major defect" to me.

As an aside, it is probably a good idea to look at a reader under "extreme conditions". It may show defects which are not readily apparent.

If it is convenient, I would always try:

an all white screen
an all black screen
both with the light at full, normal reading light level, and light off.

YMMV

Very wise when dealing with a product with such a high failure rate.

Then I got through to Kindle Support via chat who had something different to say.

Kindle Support: Due to this new device availability, I cannot provide yet with an estimated delivery date. The return of the Kindle is for free and you have 30 days to leave the Kindle in a Correos office. Make sure you keep the case, cable and accessories.

Me: ok

Kindle Support: Also, It is important for me to tell you this.

Kindle Support: At certain point it is normal for this device to have some shadows on the right side since that is were the leds are located and this device has 10 leds, the intensity of these shadows vary depending on the intensity of the light, however, it should not bother the reading. Best thing to do is to compare the replacement with the one you have at home. Since the shadows should be at minimum.

Me: I'll do a comparison when I receive it and post photos. Thanks

This confirms my decision to give up on the Oasis. I accept that some shadows from the LEDs may be normal for this device but "should not bother the reading" is subjective and the shadows bothered my reading on both of the devices that I returned.

I was simply stating, as a fact, that the device has a subtle gradient. Some people may care given the cost of the device.

Max brightness in pitch black room may be "extreme" but it is not the torture test for front lighting. You are more likely to see unevenness with the light at 20% or so in a dark room. This is how I would test it as a reviewer.

For the individual, it only matters if you see a problem in the conditions you are likely to use it.

People's habits change; why not do quick simple tests for known issues (stuck pixels, bright spots, LEDs not lighting up, ...).

I can only assume terrible quality control.
The one on the right looks very much like my first Oasis from Amazon--half the LEDs appeared to be unconnected to a power source. The one on the left looks a little better than my Oasis #2 from Best Buy, but that's going back also, since the LED cones are still too distracting. Waiting for Oasis #3 from Amazon, due early June, to see if they can get it right finally.
