To me, that looks like a $23 difference, not a $50 one. Still a silly comparison, but at least its based on actual numbers, and not just made up out of whole cloth.

Harumph!

Amazon does charge tax in the USA in certain states. I'm not sure if you are talking about taxes in USA or some other country, but my tax in Texas was $16.24.

Item(s) Subtotal: $199.00
Shipping & Handling: $3.99
-----
Total before tax: $202.99
Estimated tax to be collected: $16.24
-----
Grand Total: $219.23

NOTE: Texas makes them tax the shipping too!

Remember the Kindle Classic... yea, the very first one with the nice buttons along the side that you could easily press. (I still have mine, actually passed it down to my daughter).

The big complaint was, "When I hand my kindle to someone, they change the page."

I think that's gonna happen with this device. Isn't it?

I'm pretty certain that the Fire Phone was heavily preordered as well and they sold quite a few of them in the beginning but for Amazon, a product which doesnt keep selling still a failure. That's what makes this super-expensive Kindle so awkward in their product lineup (despite the fact that Amazon is the _perceived_ "quality-leader" in ebooks): it does not add anything substantial to the device, it is merely a gimmick-enriched "deluxe" version of the same form factor to which they attached the label "for the dedicated reader", when clearly they make the most substantial part of their business with "casual readers".
Now the Kobo Aura H2O is just the opposite, and is, strictly speaking for even more dedicated readers, because is is slightly bigger, with much improved screen real estate (because dedicated readers wont mind, it's their main item) and more robust (water resistant, can be taken to more places without worrying). This is not to describe the "dedicated reader" but to point out what kinds of features people who use their devices heavily might find more attractive.

The page presses can be turned off though. I swear I read that somewhere, I wish I could recall where now. Is there a user manual already? Maybe that is where I saw it, or someone else mentioned it.

I need brain food.

No offense, but you consider the Amazon feature "gimmicks" and the Kobo features the things that real readers want. Who are you to make that call? Amazon puts in the features that they think will sell and Kobo does the same thing. Neither one is putting in gimmicks. They are features that not everyone wants, but you sound foolish when you make the jump from "you don't want one" to "nobody wants it".

I've been using a kobo aura hd for a year and didn't even consider going to the H20 because its additions were unattractive to me. When the Voyage came out, I instantly gave the Kobo to my father and pre-ordered one because its features were just what I had been waiting for.

A year from now we can discuss if Amazon or Kobo was right. Or perhaps they both are.

I preordered one; they're up to December already, though

I'm mostly happy about the increased space and the return of some kind of button. The buttons (sensors, whatever) should make it possible for someone to develop a pool and beach friendly case that's neither a glorified zip lock bag or a Fort Knox type plastic contraption -- something like the old m-edge leisure jacket should totally work with this model.

In the UK we pay 20% Vat (tax) on almost everything, including the Kindle Voyage

Also it mentions a 300 ppi display on the 6-inch device that comes in the usual WiFi and 3G versions. The 112 x 116 mm dimensions suggest the Voyage will be smaller and at 8mm deep (can you say new round of cases?). Check out the link:

A waste of money if you have to pay 35$ more for it in Canada.
