For the local business issue - just join the traffic going to the roundabout, and go all the way around the roundabout. But perhaps your roundabouts aren't big enough?

I think the scenario is where you aren't on the correct side of the street, to go into the roundabout (though that's where you WANT to be). You are on the side of the street where everybody is driving away from the round about.

Since the brake and gas pedals are in the same orientation, I've had little trouble adjusting to drive on the left (instead of my normal right). However, the last trip was a bit terrifying: when the plane arrived, my body said it was 3am. Since I normally go to bed at 1am, I hadn't gotten much sleep. Picked up a car at the airport, and my stupid GPS aimed me at the high speed M42 going around Birmingham, rather than the interior city streets I wanted for my adjustment period. Especially since my brain was not very awake. Sheesh!

First, as you guessed, the left turn into nowhere is to allow for Uturns. There might be a street there in 20 years, maybe never, but people need to be able to get across the street and this is generally safer (briefly knew a traffic engineer guy).

A figure 8 roundabout!! I've never heard of those and seeing one after googling it would indeed give me pause. I'm having a hard enough time trying to help my sis manage the regular roundabout near her shopping area. Where I grew up, roundabouts were pretty common (called rotaries), so easy peasy for me. I'm not sure Minnesotans would be up to the complexities of a figure 8 roundabout. We aren't known for our driving skills.

The NCSU campus had one intersection with a traffic light that was the scene of many accidents ... running "late" cautions, etc. so they decided to replace it with a roundabout ... which no one knew how to drive through ... and the accidents sky-rocketed ... until even the campus buses were hitting cars ...

So they put the traffic light intersection back ...

Used to live near a circle that was large enough for a gazebo (bandstand). Drivers never seemed to have much problem, although I think a car ran through it one night. Missed the gazebo.

Now the ones built locally are small, barely room for two cars between the intersecting roads. They also seem to be too close to businesses where vehicles coming out must wait for the cars slowing down to enter the circle.

Figure 8 Be afraid I'd get stuck in it like poor Charlie on the MTA.
