Reading around the Siamese that is sprawled artistically across my desk. He'd love it if I would stop typing entirely and just pet him while he sprawls. He's been really clingly lately....

I'm beginning to prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Irene. Latest computer models [always subject to change] have it coming onshore as a category 3 hurricane following Fran's path .... which would hit us head on. Not panicking yet ... models have started to shift eastwards ... but will prepare for several days without power at least. Luckily I just bought a jumbo bag of kitty kibble and kitty litter. Everything else is secondary to the cats' comfort.

We can't import bananas due to strict quarantine. (The Vietnam War Veterans may go bananas if they had to eat yours!) Our industry is sensitive you know. But sheesh! last time a cyclone wiped out our bananas they went up to about $10 and settled at about $8 for a few months before normalising. Usually about $3 per kilo, and we grow them around here - NOT in a cyclone area. And the Northern Territory was NOT in the Yasi cyclone! and they still are charging a high price.

I just made an appointment with the physiotherapist.
About two months ago I was suddenly short of breath, I went to the doctor and had x-rays made but nothing was found. My doctor said I probably wasn't breathing right and should make an appointment with a physiotherapist. Because the shortness of breath disappeared over the weekend I never made the appointment figuring I maybe pulled a muscle or I slept on my arm and bruised something. Over the weekend the shortness of breath returned so I just made the appointment for next Monday. Personally I don't think I'm breathing wrong but it's anaemia. I've had that several times when I was a girl and both times I got breathing problems when my period started plus a couple of other symptoms. But before I can go back to my doctor I think it's best to go to my physiotherapist and see what he has to say. Luckily he's a down to earth man and will listen to my story and not just go with what my doctor thinks (he's an acquaintance/friend of my father). |

Just received an advertisement email from the computer store I bought my new computer from. It had the title "Get right to work with your new computer", ehm yeah. I brought mine back yesterday and they would look at it immediately, since I haven't heard anything I think it might be something more than a defective hard drive (or they're just busy). |

We just had a magnitude 5.9 earthquake. I didn't realize it until my wife told me she felt the shaking. I was absorbed in a couple of books I was reading on my Kindle when the quake hit, so that's perhaps why I didn't notice it. I turned on the TV, and at the moment that's all the local stations are talking about.
Although those of you living on the West Coast will no doubt be saying, "5.9? That's a quake?", I don't believe we've anything like that in this area in well over a century or two. |

Plus, it was apparently close to the surface, so it was felt more than deeper earthquakes. Or, so I read. I didn't feel it in Chicago. But my brother in central PA (Harrisburg area) did.

It was reported on the news a few minutes ago that the last quake of that magnitude was indeed in the late 1800s. I knew it had been a while. Most folks in our area aren't aware that we've ever had quakes, except for very minor ones that can barely be felt. The only reason I knew of that one is from remembering having read about it during some genealogical research I was doing.

I have just downloaded Vicki Tyley's latest book Fatal Liason. Itching to get it on my reader and get going, but I have some work to do and the tax returns are due. hmmmmm Can I whiz through my work so I can get stuck into the new book, or should I hold off knowing it will be my reward?
