You can read a PDF as is (have been able to for quite a while now) or you can use their email conversion service to have it converted to azw/mobi. PDF's can be transferred via USB or email, don't know if downloading from the browser will work now or not.

Yes and Yes, they no longer convert PDF to mobi. If you email your kindle the PDF you get the PDF.

Assuming it is a K2.... it still converts if emailing to a K1.

From the K3 manual...

If you want to convert PDF file(s) to Kindle format, you can do so by adding the word "convert" in the e-mail subject line.

...if you don't put convert you'll get the PDF.

How many "at home" networks are not peer-to-peer/ad hoc type networks? I would be very disappointed if I got the wi-fi only version and could not connect through my home network.

From manual page 41;

Connect to a Wi-Fi Network

Your Kindle can connect to Wi-Fi networks or hotspots that use the 802.11b or 802.11g standard. Kindle does not connect to enterprise or ad-hoc Wi-Fi networks (networks that allow peer-to-peer connections without a wireless access point).

On page 42 they show how to scan for your home network and enter the password. I'm pretty sure this will connect to your home network.

Kindle automatically detects nearby Wi-Fi networks and hotspots that broadcast their network name. When you visit a place that offers Wi-Fi access, such as your school, home, or the Wi-Fi hotspot at your favorite cafe, you can set up a Wi-Fi network. Once you set up a Wi-Fi network and connect to it, Kindle automatically connects to it the next time you return to the same place, as long as the Wi-Fi signal is strong enough.
