You can read a PDF as is (have been able to for quite a while now) or you can use their email conversion service to have it converted to azw/mobi. PDF's can be transferred via USB or email, don't know if downloading from the browser will work now or not.

If Amazon had even an half decent selection of books in portuguese, I would offer this K3 to my mother.

As only the UK and Ireland can buy this model, I think it won't go that far... (yes, I was redirected to the US site, while the UK is only across a small pond, and the US across a much larger one!)

Yes and Yes, they no longer convert PDF to mobi. If you email your kindle the PDF you get the PDF.

From the K3 manual...
Quote:
If you want to convert PDF file(s) to Kindle format, you can do so by adding the word "convert" in the e-mail subject line.
...if you don't put convert you'll get the PDF.

I would like a review from someone who gets the wi-fi only K3 & has an 802.11 home network.
From manual page 41;

Connect to a Wi-Fi Network

Your Kindle can connect to Wi-Fi networks or hotspots that use the 802.11b or 802.11g standard. Kindle does not connect to enterprise or ad-hoc Wi-Fi networks (networks that allow peer-to-peer connections without a wireless access point).
On page 42 they show how to scan for your home network and enter the password. I'm pretty sure this will connect to your home network.

Interesting. So that wouldn't include the wi-fi hotspots that Android/Palm Pre phones/MiFi's create? (which are ad hoc)

For the people who still shop in this manner, the Kindle is not the ereader they are likely to choose. Here in Canada, Chapters & Indigo have the Kobo ereader in stores to play with. In the States, B&N will have the same thing. Amazon lacks this presence, and I know that I am not the only person who doesn't want to buy an ereader until playing with one.

On another note, I work at a small college in one of Canada's largest cities, yet ereaders are still barely on most of my (voraciously reading) coworkers' radars. I have shown some of them the Kindle, and while they thought it was neat, they wanted to experience one before making a purchase. At least one of them has since bought a Kobo simply because it was available to touch, hold, and purchase immediately.

If the Kindle isn't on everyone's radar yet, how can the format wars be over?
Everyone has 30 days to touch, hold and experience a Kindle. It can be returned in that time for a full refund.

Top of page 41:

Quote:
1.7 Using Wi-Fi

Kindle automatically detects nearby Wi-Fi networks and hotspots that broadcast their network name. When you visit a place that offers Wi-Fi access, such as your school, home, or the Wi-Fi hotspot at your favorite cafe, you can set up a Wi-Fi network. Once you set up a Wi-Fi network and connect to it, Kindle automatically connects to it the next time you return to the same place, as long as the Wi-Fi signal is strong enough.

I have no problem with stripping DRM from a book I have paid for,I do that all the time, but stripping DRM from an ebook lent to you by a library, is wrong, legally, and more importantly, ethically.

So your big red letters, did not inform so much as confuse the issue.
I'm not sure how you can STEAL a borrowed library book. if there are DRM issues, I believe that there are already other threads in place discussing the recent changes in DRM issues/ laws

and the big red letters were to point out that books for

Kindles are available places other than Amazon
