Imagine the size difference when you jump from a 6 inch Kindle Touch to a 7.8 inch KA1.

My contribution to the comparison pictures. I’m comparing two Kobo Sage and a Kindle Oasis.

My take:
  • The Kindle Oasis has better lightning, both subjectively in real life and in the pictures. Without natural colour, it looks subjectively whiter in real life and its tint can get stronger. The lightning’s also more even.
  • Both Sage have the white patches near the buttons.
  • Without natural light and compared to the Kindle, one Sage seems to have a bluish tint, the other a greenish one. Not quite evident in real life.
  • With natural light, one Sage veers towards a subtler orangish tint, while the other is more dark yellow and more pronounced. This is quite visible in real life as well and even when not comparing side by side.
  • Both Kobos have a slight diagonal shadow at 45° from the corners on the button side, the “yellowish” a bit less visible.

When not compared side-to-side, the difference during usage isn't night and day. My subjective slight preference probably goes towards the “yellowish” Sage, which is the one I’ll keep. Overall, though, the Kindle Oasis has much better lightning; obviously, Kobo hasn’t sorted out this aspect of their readers yet.

Thanks. Yeah, that's more or less what I see with my Sage and the Oasis.

Still, as you say, the Sage isn't actually bad; the Oasis is just pretty close to perfect. In real life, while reading, I've already mostly stopped noticing any imperfections of the Sage frontlight. I no longer even see the white strip near the buttons, unless I make a conscious effort to do so (it bothered me the first couple of days).

I generally agree with you that around 8" is a very good ebook size, and I am also senstive to too heavy devices.

That said I think it depends on the different individual models. The Forma is one of the ereaders with the absolutely best size/weight ratio.

I have a Libra 2 and the light is very even. My only gripe is it goes from green tint to yellow within one click; I want a neutral white in between for day reading.

Is the difference the recessed screen? If so, Kobo should just stick to recessed screen until they can figure out how to do front light + flush screen correctly.

Don't think so. The Libra 1 had an uneven light too. And a recessed screen.

My own standards for screen quality are so low that my Sage (like my Libra H2O) still has its original plastic screen protector on it, and in neither case do I notice. What I am noticing more and more is the absence of a case. The Sage is by far the most expensive ereader I've ever bought, and the long delay in the arrival of the sleep cover is beginning to make me nervous. This is an investment I need to protect.

I'm keeping mine in its original box until the power cover arrives (who knows when that will be... in 2022?)

The screen protector was removed immediately, though. OTOH, my phone still has its original screen protector from 2018 and it still looks good, doesn't peel, curl, ripple or anything.

Have you ever compared them without?

Those are not ordinary screen protectors. They are not intended be used as such.

They are only cheap plastic protection during manufacturing and transportation.
