When we took down the canopy and put in a different bed, we just put the lights around the edge of the room at ceiling height. Hope this helps.
I did that years ago in my son's room when he was a little tyke. He loved it! It was pretty darn cool, and I thought about doing it in our master bedroom too. Thanks for the reminder!

How old are these lamps?
No dimmers but one is a 3-way that I know wouldn't work.

I pushed the tongue up a little but no change. I didn't try the adapter because the bulb wouldn't fit under the wire bracket that holds the shade.

Since the lamps are about 12-15 years old, the problem is most likely energy supply as DT said. It's not worth buying new lamps so save a few watts.

I never changed out my hall light because it is on less than an hour a year.

The only non-dimmer related LED incompatibility I've run into is with my touch-sensitive 3-way torchiere. I tried one of the very few availale 3-way LED bulbs and it simply would not work. I'm assuming the issue is in the touch-control electronics needing a specific sort of load.
Usually, LED (and CFL) incompatibility comes from using a voltage-based dimmer circuit and an LED bulb whose power supply isn't capable of handling variable input voltage. You really need to use a PWM-based dimmer with LEDs and CFLs. In theory, there are some CFLs that are supposed to be able to work with older dimmers, but....

Of course, true misery is using certain cheap CFLs and LEDs with low-frequency PWM dimmers and getting an audible whine.

The following video was recently released concerning the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack from the iPhone. It looks like it is closer to being reality:

One feature of the 3.5mm headphone jack that would seem to be an issue with the lightning connector: How physically strong is the lightning connector? On my devices with the 3.5mm headphone jack the connection is physically strong enough so that the plug doesn't come out if the cord gets pulled on by mistake (my headphones come off instead). But with the lightning connector it looks like it isn't a very strong connection and it would only take a light tug to pull it out. It probably isn't an issue for stationary devices but would it be an issue for mobile devices.

I didn't mean the adaptor as a permanent fix, only a quick way to troubleshoot. If the problem is merely mechanical, I may be willing to fix it. If it is electrical, I won't personally touch it - I am no electrician.

On the bright side, I am moving into a new house soon that has newer ceiling fans throughout. As neat as recessed lighting may look, it is not worth the trouble with heat issues on new led lighting technology.

If that's the same connection I see in macbooks and such, I don't think I'd want to put my phone in my pocket while walking (and using the headphones, naturally).

It takes more than a light tug to pull it out. I don't think it would be a problem.

When I walk, I use headphones that loop around my ears. I think the lightning connector would detach before the headphone would. Especially if you put the phone in your coat pocket (as I usually do when I listen to audiobooks) while walking.

Probably, yes, but you'd want that to happen. You don't want to physically damage the port on the phone by subjecting it to high levels of stress. If you physically catch the cable on an obstruction, you want the cable to detach. That's one reason that expensive headphones generally have a cable connection on the headphones themselves, so that if you catch something the cable pulls off rather than the headphones.

For comparison, though, on a few occasions, when I've had my iPhone connected to my PC, I've knocked it off the corner of my desk, and it's fallen a couple of feet and just hung by the cable. The cable hasn't come unplugged. That illustrations that it needs a reasonable amount of force to be unplugged, I think.

I'm wondering if the new iPhone will even have a lightning jack. I'd think they'd be moving towards a magnetic charger like the Apple Watch.

Sure, wireless charging is logical, but don't forget that the Lightning connector isn't just used for charging, but also to connect peripherals.

You mean like the 3.5 mm jack is used to connect to peripherals (e.g. headphones, credit card swipers)?

That's what we're discussing, isn't it? Whether or not it's a sensible replacement?

No, what I was saying - if the headphone jack can go for cosmetic reasons, then the lighting connector has to go too.
